With the really heavy rain up here the past couple of weeks my 99plate mondeo hasn’t fared too well. The spare tyre depression has a little pool of water in it and the boot is literally soaking. My rear left side passenger floor is also soaking wet however the right side is dry. I'm guessing its most likely coming from a dodgy seal in the rear light clusters. It's starting to become a right pain in the ass with the condensation inside the car and I can only imagine its going to get worse as the days get colder.

Im going to attempt a diy job on it when I get a chance, any ideas of the best way of going about it and what sealant i should use?

It is indeed the rear light cluster. Use bathroom sealent. Do both clusters at once as if the other isn't leaking, it will be soon.

I had this on my ST....it was the left rear cluster. It wasn't causing the torrential flooding you've had, but was making the carpet in the boot wet on that particular slide.

I used some Loctite Silicone, I'd recommend it above a bathroom sealant...well just because, it's probably the same stuff actually! But you'll get a small tube of Loctite for £3, I sealed around the existing rubber sealant and now she is completely water tight.

I had a similar problem with mine like fox said bathroom sealer does a decent enough job. Just clean up the area first.

This is really common on the Mk2s, I dont think there are many out there that dont have a damp boot :)

Easy enough fix though

Stupid question. But you mentioned the passenger floor was wet as well. Would that still be the rear light cluster?? or the door seal

I have the same problem with my 51 plate but its on the right passenger foot well only.

Passenger footwell tends to be the pollen filter in the mrk 2's apparently the pipe connecting to the housing tends to leak. It can also be fixed with silicone but its a pita to work on due to its location.

I've got reciepts for when mine was a couple of years old and went in to have it done under warranty!

A friend also has a Mondeo (ST24 also) and his boot floor was soaking wet, also rear light seals!

Is this a common problem on MK3s? My rear window is always fogged up in cold damp weather, I must lift the rubber boot liner + boot carpet to check for dampness sometime.

Nope, not a common/known problem on Mk3s - might be the pollen filter though
