When would people say is sensible to start getting private hours in when learning to drive.

Done 6 (3x 2hour) hours of lessons so far. I can pull away, stop, junctions, pedestrian crossings and roundabouts. To a degree obviously need more practice. But i figure there's not much else left to do other than more advance stuff like maneuvers etc. Would now be a good time to get some provisional insurance on the mum's punto and get some private hours in?

opinions ?

Straight away. I found that driving with various different people in the car and to work and back, to pick people up and everything meant that when the examiner sat in my car - I felt right at home and it wasn't new to me.

I started almost straight away.

Make sure you take it one step at a time though. Dont want to find yourself on a busy street during rush hour when you're still having to think about the clutch and gears etc.

Absolutely, get some extra practice in. To start with when I was learning I went out on Sundays a lot (very quiet here - Sabbath observance) and the lower traffic levels meant I could learn different routes, junction types etc. with much less pressure in case I screwed up. You might want to explain to your mum how and what your instructor's been teaching you so you don't get pulled in different directions.

Brilliant. :) That's what i like to hear. To difference in cars (AA: Focus Mum: Punto) wont be too much of a hurdle (do you reckon anyway!)?

Suppose the next natural question: Where sells L plates? :D seriously. Halfords?

I went from a Diesel to a petrol - was a bit tricky, but got used to the petrol and passed test in that.

I wish i could get private hours in tbh, each time i've tried to drive my family's petrol car it's been a hassle as a: the cluch is going, and b: i learn in a diesal with my instructor. But neither my brother or mother would be able to teach to save their lives.

i drove in my mums car before having lessons, my dad tried to make me go round a roundabout, i wasn't having any of it! I had barely even learned clutch control :p

My instructors car was a diesel Astra, my mums is a ford ka petrol! Only difference was that my mums is a lot quicker to go! And the astral had abs, my mums didn't so i was always braking heavily in the Astra!

I'd get driving your mums car asap! The more you get used to driving with other people the more comfortable you will feel with the examiner :)

After roughly how many hours of lessons where you done with learning to drive in the very basic sense and doing more advance stuff if you dont mind me asking?

About 12-4 hours for me, but my first instructor was an ape in the worst sense of the word. I did learn just about everything from him though and my new instructor is much better allowing me to refine what i know. i'm sure i could have done the basics in <10hours in 2hour lessons personally.
edit: at around 30hours now and basicly test standard by the way.

ive owned my own car since october, learning since september. i will admit i have barely been in my car since i bought it. but ive just booked my test and have 8 weeks to get everything smooth so im trying to get out and about in my own car atleast 4 times a week plus my lesson on wednesdays.

it will help as it will increase confidence and being my own car i will be able to get into it and drive off when i pass my test as nothing will be new (or so thats my theory, i will probably panic when i realise theres no1 sat next to me)
