Hi all,

I'm 23, I've had around 10 lessons so far in a Vauxhall Corsa (Diesel) and it was going ok, I've come back from holiday and the guy has changed to a Petrol, the clutch will take a couple of lessons to get used to.

My dad has got an Astra (Petrol), and I was thinking I could just practice in that.

Would you say getting learner driver insurance is worthwhile? I've got quotes from £80-100 price per month (hopefully all I'll need), excesses range from £250-350.

These two are both saying £80 for a month.

AA are saying £98 for the month.

Honestly, as a learner, you'll be less used to the clutch from being on holiday than it changing to a petrol. The hill start etc is all the same.

Edit: Ignore, I thought you were looking for insurance after you pass. Try Confused for some quotes...

Get dad to take you somewhere off the public highway and spend 20min practicing with the Astra, then carry on with your lessons.

You'll find clutches vary from vehicle to vehicle sometimes even with two identical models.

I got added as a named driver to practice driving, you're going to need someone with you so just have them put you on as named and go from there.

You'll need to be added to the policy on that astra. As you can only have 1 policy on a car at one time. I got myself a petrol ford ka and used that to practise with. Was cheaper to insure as a provisional due to the fact you'd always have a named driver with you. I then passed in a diesel hyundia getz. Just stop using the ka a few weeks before my test. Then after I passed phoned up to tell them I passed. I suspect now they would slap an admin charge along with a bigger premium to boot.
