learning a language

In that case, my advice would be to go with hindi. It would be easier to learn if you already know a bit of the script because its a phonetic language. In addition, I don't know which part of India you're going to, but since its punjabi, i'l assume north india, you will find many more people speaking hindi than punjabi. Especially if you're going to Delhi.

Hindi at an advanced level is pretty hard, at least I found it so, and i lived there for 17 years :p , but just basic speaking/listening, should be quite easy once you know the script. Since you already know quite a bit of it, that's a head start anyway in learning it.

Punjabi is pretty similar to hindi, but if your dad speaks both, I would advise going for hindi.

As with anything, it just takes time and lots of practice.

I've been learning bits and pieces of lots of languages for the past 3 years or so and although my progress is slowed by the amount of languages I've taken on, my understanding of languages as a whole is quite good.

These include French, Spanish, German and Japanese. With bits of Korean, Polish and Turkish.

I was thinking of asking a college friend to teach me Urdu but it will take a lot of effort on her part and I don't feel that it's my place to ask.

I've got people from all over the world on my MSN list and they're very helpful, but my speaking and listening will be off except for German which I've taken more seriously than others over the years.

Hi guys, I have decided since some of my family don't speak english and my dad didn't bother to teach me panjabi when I was young, to start to learn it.

Nail - head.
Sorry Daven but if your family are living in England its they who should be learning your language, unless you mean when you go out to India a few weeks a year.

Nah I'm talking about my family in India, my family here all speak english of course! I don't agree with people coming to live in a country where they don't speak the language.

Yeah my dads friend suggested hindi to start, but panjabi is a little harder so when I understand it, hindi should be easier than panjabi would be if I learnt hindi first. Also I like panjabi and have already started to learn a bit, so I'd like to continue. Yeah more people do speak hindi, however I'm determined to learn panjabi and hindi (at some point) but I chose to start with panjabi as learning it comes higher on my list of things to do!!

Thanks

Daven
