Learning a second language

;):p

Now in English to the OP, as our learned friend here has said (and then contradicted) it is easy to learn another language, you just need to practice and expose yourself to the language at every opportunity...foreign language films are great for this as is visiting (or living in) the country whose language you are trying to learn. Once you can speak with some level of confidence you can then learn the rules of the language....but it is generally easier to speak another language, than write another language.

Kids pick up languages within months. It will delay slightly single language development but at the age of 4-5y they will be fluent in all of them. Easiest way to learn a language. Know families where parents are from different countries and live in the UK and the kids at this young age can speek all languages easily.

I actually learned Dutch by watching Simpsons, Friends and a few other series in English with Dutch subtitles :)
This makes a massive difference. This is why people in Scandinavia and Flanders/NL speak more English than the French, Germans, etc..

You grow up in NL/BE?

Yeah born in Brussels :)

Expat parents, international school. Basically immersed in languages from day one. I'm very lucky. Just a shame I can't seem to use my languages in a job, because I don't have a piece of paper that says I know them well enough :/

Ridiculous.

I learned french in school but hated it because we had a teacher who would tell you off for not speaking in a french accent which I didn't see as being important.

Has anyone used software from Fluenz to learn a second language?

My manager at work has been using it to learn German, and he has high praise for it. I'm thinking of getting the German pack myself. I've read that it's better than Rosetta Stone because it doesn't put as much focus on building up a massive vocabulary.
