learning microsoft office

But it does give you the edge over the other applicants/job seekers that prefer to watch Jeremy Kyle or play WOW all day.

Yes and dog urine is better than dog turd, but they're still both dog excretions that you wouldn't rub on your face. In today's job market you need to get the edge over everyone and to do that you need to do as much as you possible can in preparation.

The book Microsoft Office Inside Out is ment to be good.

Also you should try and find some voluntary office work near you as that will be good for the CV.

yes i will ask my advisor in 2 weeks about 1 day a week maybe in an office.
i'll look into that book but for now i have downloaded these
power presentations that shows you how to master each application and
has video walk throughs its rather good.

Surely some entry level comptia+ for a couple hundred quid is better spent??
Are there any office quals worth it? Everything I have ever needed was learnt via google on the job (which laughably goes up to v/h lookups in Excel, and self taught SRSS reporting - and I was considered the expert in the office with a bit of SQL knowledge)

I did CLAIT as part of a GCSE in 1996 it was never worth anything...........

*update*

managed to get a neighbour to give me an office 2010 license key
as he had quite a few for his company :)

there are probably more office's using 2010 at the moment anyway
and once i feel proficient in each package, ie word etc i will get myself
an office 2013 (365) license and update my skill set.

I've started with word and learnt a lot ( doing 4 hours a night ) so i
could potentially get an office job soonish before i have learnt all the other stuff.

thanks for the tips guys.
PS: anyone want an office gimp? lol (north west ) :D

I find it quite surprising how low the bar is for being "proficient" in Office. I'd class my knowledge of Office software as being not all that much above nothing, but I am apparently "proficient" because I can handle the basics and search the help files effectively.

I think your willingness to take action and learn is more of an asset than a low-level qualification proving basic competence with Office (though it's harder to effectively put it on a CV).

Glad you agree about getting the edge.

that might well be useful... learning to use 'word' alone isn't - obviously if you previously weren't familiar with it then its something you needed to fix but that in itself won't necessarily get you a job. Getting some experience through volunteering could well help and does show commitment.

Without knowing anything about you I would mention again that the main office application you can probably add value (above simply being able to use them at a basic level) is Excel. Lots of people who may use spreadsheets every day will never learn much more than the basics and someone like you who is prepared to study/acquire a skill can become visibly productive very rapidly in a new job if you do put the effort in. Being visibly productive is the key really - if in the future you get an entry level admin type job in say the finance dept of some random company and can suddenly show them that you're a bit of a wizz with excel then you'll likely become very useful very quickly. Much more so than knowing some esoteric stuff about word - sometimes word docs have annoying formatting issues but people tend to work around them in a brute force kind of way until the document looks roughly how they want... spreadsheets on the other hand can cause headaches for people in a way they can't easily work around..
