Learning to Draw

All those books are BS. I tried one called 'how to draw anything', followed the guidelines for drawing people over a week, and was still no better than I started.

I think I'd probably agree, at least from a scientific perspective. The idea of "shutting off the left side of the brain" is laughable at best and even the notion that the left and right side of your brain are either A) independent or B) Manipulatable is pretty dumb.

It does get some good reviews and it is one of many books that worked well for my brother, so I suppose behind all the pseudo-science carp there is probably some good techniques in there.

So what sort of program was used to make this?

This is the sort of thing I'd like to eventually be able to draw.

I think that's a 3D rendering - not 100% sure. If it is it'll probably have been modelled in something like Maya or 3ds Max maybe.

Everyone can learn to draw like Van Gough, or learn to play the piano like Mozart, everyone can do anything that they set their mind to ....

The sick twisted miseducation of the labour generation :p

lol a whole week...if you'd been trying to draw for a few months and still not got any better your argument might have more weight. Just sayin'.

well, most likely 3sdmax or Maya for the 3d model. then photoshop for the textures. imported into photoshop for some tarting up.

creating stuff in 3d takes a lot of practice bhut you dont need to be a great artist really. just to have loads of spare time.

i think being good at drawing is something you are born with. if you work hard you might be ok, but if you dont have the natural talent for perspective and shading etc it will be hard.

its much easier to create a picture digitally these days but when you see a GOOD illustrator drawing in real time its bloody impressive.

my best mate at school was a bit of a div but a superb artist. i was always jealous of that ability.

Since I was in kindergarten, I was the worst in the class at drawing, and specifically struggled immensely with drawing people. But I was top of the class in Music. Just saying.

I remember learning to draw by copying everything out of comic books :o

There are a ton of sites out there that have models in poses to help with anatomy and proportions.

you might have to go through masses of tenticle porn by all the anime weirdos first :)

get a manikin from an art shop. it will teach you where the joints are and how to get natural poses. 3d doesnt matter too much with posing as you create the model and then can skin it (add the life-like textures) and put it in any pose you want. when drawing with a pencil etc you have to get this right from the start

Are you trolling? No-one is suggesting you might be able to draw like Van Gough.

Wow. I guess there is no point in trying anything then? Because you could never hope to swim as fast as Michael Phelps, or be as good a programmer as John Carmack, or write pulitzer prize winning novels.

Don't remember that in Ultimate Spiderman/Xmen

Look at the emoticon. ;)

I never said there's no point! There's definitely a point if you're good at doing it. I was making a joke about the 'everyone can learn to do anything' belief that too many people have nowadays.

And its not just drawing either. A lifetime spent learning how to write and doing hours of handwriting practice daily, and my handwriting was always terrible and illegible. I am completely incapable of drawing and writing well.

I disagree, anyone can draw. Whether you can draw to what you deem a satisfactory level another thing. I mean anyone can drive a car but not everyone can drive a F1 car but just because you can't doesn't mean you shouldn't ever drive or try to.

I'm just off to art class, there are people there who's work I look at and think, "hmm yes I used to draw like that years ago but I've practiced and got better".

When I was travelling I spent some time with an art teacher who recommended this book:

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards.

I've not bought it yet though but she was singing it's praises.
