Boring thread of the day but minor thing that others might be aware of but I certainly wasn't. I've always been under the impression that anything over 9 years of NCD doesn't get you any additional discount for your premium, seems I was wrong.

May of this year, switched insurers, got my 12 years proof of NCD letter (Aviva) - submitted this to new insurer (Darwin), all good.

A few weeks back I changed to a different car that they wouldn't insure due to aftermarket alloys (they don't touch anything with a modification). So I cancelled with them and the proof of NCD they provided was only 9 years, in my mind, no biggie, that's max discount.

Last few weeks it's been playing on my mind so reached out to my current insurer (Admiral), asked them if they would just update to 12 years as based on May's letter from Aviva as in principal, it bugged me losing 3 years on the records. I clearly stated I wanted a records update and wasn't after a further discount.

They replied a few hours letter, records updated and 3% refunded off my premium :)

Like I say, bit dull but might be something that helps out other folk save a bit more in the future.

I had a nightmare over this a few years ago and had to go back to three previous insurers to get my NCD back to where it should be because one that I left only recognises 9 years and wiped a chunk of it out. New insurer wanted me to provide proof or I had to pay a lot more so I had to go back as far as I could and get a letter stating what I earned when I left them and passed it on to the next insurer, rinse and repeat a couple more times. I noticed my current insurer has wiped out 9 years NCD at my renewal last month so when I leave them I need to make sure they give me the full 19 years I hopefully will have by then.

Ncd is a bit wierd, you can't split it, but if you have a crash it would affect 2 cars, as you say different companies do different max lengths.

Yeah it's a bit daft really. Needs some standardisation. Should be based on the driver rather than the vehicle. And then an agreed max amongst all insurers.

In 12 years I've never been asked to provide proof of NCD. Although I am probably about to switch insurers (been with Hastings the last few years) so perhaps I've jinxed it.

Should be based on the driver rather than the vehicle.
Yeah insurers get to have the cake and eat it, few years back someone pulled out of a junction on me while i was driving my dads car writing it off, he was the policy holder i was a named driver, both of us had to put the claim on insurance for the next five years utter bs

He shouldn't have imo, the crash wasn't against him.

Another boring update - always though NCD expires after 2 years across the board. Turns out some insurers accept up to 3 years - wife hasn't had her own car for 2.5 years (been named driver on my 3 MPS) but managed to get her insured on her own policy which will honour the 5 years NCD she had from mid 2020.

I have to say my dealings with Admiral so far have been good - much better than any other insurer - they did jack my dad's insurance up 300% for no apparent reason and could only drop it slightly so he went elsewhere though.

I do find admiral to be quite good except for renewal. When I paired my home insurance with them I saved more on my policy than the home insurance cost so it was really good

When I took insurance with them a few weeks back, I got a quote for a single vehicle - then on final page before paying, they offered home insurance. I got both policies together for over £100 less than just taking the single vehicle insurance.

Yeah its a fantastic deal that I didn't have any idea about until I nearly purchased too.
