Our company shares leased line costs with a major client who is located in the same building but later this year the client will be moving out the building and thus doubling our line costs...

We currently have a 2Mb line with MCI who are charging us an arm and leg - 18K per annum to be precise!!

It has been made clear that these costs are not welcome (nor viable) and therefore a switch in supplier may be necessary. I personally feel that you get what you pay for in this world and MCI are a very good ISP, but this is coming from the top so I'm starting to gather the relevant info on Leased Line providers in order to understand what's out there.

Basically i'm after any feedback on service / suppliers / costs and experiences on anything related to this topic - I haven't even got my head around the technical side of this yet so any pointers or advice here would be welcome too!

Dan.

Entanet are supposedly highly regarded, but I don't think you're going to get a huge reduction in price, really - depends on location though.

Have you thought about alternative solutions (bonded ADSL, or SDSL?) - or does it have to be a leased line?

I use Easynet for all our leased lines across Europe. Their support can be a bit flaky but I refuse point blank to deal with level 1 people so on the whole it is ok.

As far as the technical side goes, ig you're sharing the current leased line then I guess it has more than 1 public IP address and your company is using on of them? If so, you'll just need to change the IP address on the interface on your firewall (router, or whatever) that connects to the LL.

Entanet eh... will check them out.

At this point in time I am not considering the move away from a leased line due to the fact that we offer a number of hostes services (web, email, DNS, email marketing, statistics etc...) are thus require 1:1 contension and excellent reliability.

Easynet were our first choice supplier but I've heard a few horror stories flying over the past few months and this has lead me to re-evaluate our options. Don't get me wrong Easynet are still on the short list I'm re-opening the transfer window as it were...

As for the technical element, we are currently assigned a 255 IP block from MCI (about 50% will be utilized after the move) and dependant on these IP's are numberous web, email and DNS servers as well as a hosting control panel and serveral hundred domain names  This is going to be a headache to say the least!

I've been looking at NTL's leased lines - anyone had experience with them?

Ah, I didn't think you were hosting stuff off the end of the leased line. Yeah, it is a real pain when you have to change, I've done it twice in the last year (once in Uk going from /25 to /24, and once in France going from /29 to /25).

We have a UU-Net/MCI 2MB leased line at the moment.
I too feel that you get what you pay for and as support has been so good on the line we are happy to continue paying the fees.
We're about to discuss moving to a 4MB connection and the overall cost isn't going to be much more (which was a surprise).

We did look at some other suppliers last year.
However as you know what also needs to be taken into consideration is the IP address changes that go on etc.
It's no simple matter of simply moving from one ISP to another - even if the only public IP address you've got is your router!

I think it was Easynet we took a look at and yes, they were cheaper.

We use Thus for our leased line. Currently pay £7,000 pa for 2MB. Thus own Demon Internet but I'm pretty sure you could get the Thus leased line without having to take on Demon.

The biggest element of the costs are going to depend on your distance from the provider in question's nearest PoP.

Hmmm... thanks Tolien that's food for thought.

And if I could negotiate £7k pa with a local provider then I'm sure the MD will be a happy man!

Time to start phoning round for some preliminary quotes I think...

Star offer good leased lines, tho limited coverage.
We have a 2meg leased line for internet right into the belly of star internet. UNFORTUNATELY our other 3 lines are BT megastreams and are expensive and poor quality. One moreso than the others, and that's the one i'm sitting on the end of :( so when it goes i can do bugger all to the other 4 sites which meakes life fun cos we have an IT department of 3 spread over 5 sites.
