Hi guys,

First off - not a medical thread, I just need some advice about lifting.

I suffer from really bad hip pain at the moment, probably related to Crohn's Disease. I went to the gym yesterday for the 3rd time after an 18 month hiatus due to joint pain. I squatted 70kg, which is about 40kg under what I've ever maxed out at.

Today my joints are in agony, so I think that I'm going to stop squatting as it's put way too much pressure on my hips, but obviously I still want to be able to work out my legs.

I'm not trying for size as my legs are big enough as it is, but I'm definitely trying for strength and to improve my lower back, so what exercises would you recommend? I'm guessing some sort of legs raises or something similar...

Thanks, dirtychinchilla

Go and see a musculoskeletal physio and a proper Strength and Conditioning coach. As well as a doctor.

Getting systemic join pain after compound exercises could be a number of things, but best to rule them out via a doctor and a proper physio.

I'm already going to the doctor about the pain - it's not due to weightlifting, it's just part of having Crohn's.

Apologies - the words "probably" and "joints" didn't make that clear.

I would strongly advise going to a MSK physio, however, as they will be able to properly assess your condition and capability, and then match that off to a workout regime...

I've been to a physiotherapist and it has helped my back, but not the hip pain. I'm having an MRI soon, so I'll find out more about what's going on, then I'll have a better idea of what I need to do. We didn't appear to be a specialist in MSK.

Thanks for the suggestion, I think at least going to some sort of coach would help.

Thing is, there are a few people on here who could probably do just as good a job, but they cannot take your symptoms into account properly as they can't be seen/visualised/etc. (does it hurt when you do this/...).

A proper coach will be able to do that. And be insured. ;)
