Legend of Grimrock - Dungeon Master Fan's !

What I missed the first couple of times is that if you move quickly, you can step forwards again immediately after stepping on the plate that seals the door.

(At first I thought you just got hemmed straight in against the wall and thus have to kill at least one spider before you can move. But this isn't actually the case)

This means you can then step back and strafe so you're not surrounded instantly.

Once you've got out of the situation of being hemmed in, it's quite easy (so long as you don't blunder into the ogre like I did a couple of times... :) )

I found this bit quite easy, but lots seem to have lots of problems with it.

I just killed the spiders, then the Ogre was a piece of piddle. Just run circles round him.

The rooms massive so you can keep backing off and circling to get clear if you're being swamped a bit.

Yep, done it now. They were just getting the jump on me to start with. Made a dash to the gate and slammed it down to cut them off. Then just picked them off one by one :D

Still loving this game. Going to play more of it tomorrow. It'll be a nice way to kill a few hours on a quiet Sunday afternoon.

I did the revolving teleporters puzzle after I worked out which pressure pad did what. Ventured further down, and OMG, SPIDERS!

I found a room with about 5 of them in it. Managed to clear that fairly easily by using Ice Shard (line 'em up, ladies! :D), but then found a room later on with three in it. I drew the first out and killed it, went back for the second, and ended up getting attacked from the side. I assumed the second one in the room had flanked me, so ran back to the room, straight into the clutches of another two. Surrounded and dead in seconds. Son of a... :p

This game is brilliant, I am loving the old-school gameplay!

Just got down to level 6...

Any thoughts on the accuracy stat for weapons? Is it really a big deal if its a negative value, or will you just miss all the time?

I have just acquired a weapon that does massive damage (to giant enemy crabs :D ) but has a large negative accuracy modifier.

First run I had little or no food. This time I seem to be weighed down with it all.

If I leave it somewhere will it persist so I can come back for it?

Where is everyone finding all this flashy armour? I've still not found anything decent and i'm into level 6 now. I guess it's behind these metal doors I can never manage to open :(

Them and all the secrets from hidden switches and special ways of doing the puzzles.

It's well worth looking for it all. I'm getting my arse kicked with some really tasty gear at times, must be a nightmare with average stuff at times. :o

1 -Get used to checking the walls for hidden switches
2 - Jump down pits
3 - jump in teleporters
4 - Explore EVERYWHERE :)

I stayed up till 3am playing this last night, haven't done that with a game in years!

Regarding the chichin armour

When you go to grab the four scrolls for that word puzzle I think it's level 4 or 5, there is a teleporter in the middle of a room surrounded by open pits in each corner and a walkway down each center. If you look to your left, there is a button on the wall beyond four open pits. You've got to double back quickly press the switch/button/lever whatever and then run towards the teleporter turn left across the closed pits, quickly go back before they open and fall down the center pit before the teleporter comes back

As for me, how do I get that silver Armour that's behind the locked gate when you fall down any of the pits on level 4/5 ?

Great little game, real blast from the past with that DM feel to it. I remember playing that for @6months and still finding secrets in it.

On my second run through, this time for a complete explore, finding & solving all secrets, won't take me 6 months though, doubt it will last me more then a week or two, still excellent value for a indie £10 game.

A few basic dungeoneering tips from an old dweller like myself:
1) First clear an area of baddies then spend some time properly exploring it, I tend to sidestep past walls and quickly check for switches (easy to spot once you know what to look for)
2) Jump down any pits, obviously close lying pits will dump you in the same area below, use map and common sense. Make sure everything that can be solved on a level is solved before moving on, although in a few cases, a level cannot be completed unless you drop in from the level above, find/solve a secret or find a way up from the level below. So if in doubt, come back to it 1 level later and recheck.
3) Food & certain items are essential, I'd recommend keeping around some rocks & torches in your backpacks, stack up on food as much as possible but eat the heavy weighing food first to avoid easily being overloaded. There will be a few times you cannot carry anymore, I would recommend you drop off a bunch of stuff near an easily accessible area (like near the stairs) and make a note on the map, which I recommend you also do for any closed doors/areas you cannot get to yet.
4) I had no problems running out of food here but that was a hard lesson learned in DM, stack up when you can and leave cache supplies if you have too much and in some cases, farm regenerating food dropping mobs, of which there are few.
5) Practice moving around fast with your party (never has there been a game that requires sidestepping so much!) and always have a plan of retreat, although there are some instances that dumps you right in the cr@pper, but still you should rely on mobility and a cool head (I usually die cause I panic and fumble the controls)

Lastly an important note to all Grimrock players regarding exploration and general dungeon skulking, AFAIK, there is only 1 place that stops you from backtracking all the way to level 1 and that is shortly after the spiral (level 10 IIRC), once you get to the end of the spiral (or go down stairs not sure) there seems to be a wall that closes at the start of the spiral which will stop you from back tracking altogether (tried looking for a way to open it but there simply isn't one, I have an odd feeling its a bug, the blocking wall should disappear after the encounters but it doesn't). So once you get there, make a separate save file just in case you find you forgot or missing something, I did on my first time around, so be warned.

NOTE to Minotaur Head Hunter players, if you find any skulls, DO NOT put them into containers like sacks or chests. Unless you carry the skulls in your main inventory, it does not add the bonus once the skull(s) are in a container. Bit annoying.

Apart from that have fun getting lost, peeing your pants and generally go stir crazy figuring your way through Grimrock ;).

Is this the area with two teleporters behind two gates with plates under them? There should be a switch and a plate (you'll need to pop something on the plate) that you can use to turn the teleporters off, then put some items through the gates onto both of the plates to open the gates.
Extra secret:
Once you're in there, you can push the switch again to turn a teleporter back on and go through it.

Will do a Screenie tonight to make myself more clear :)

Pretty sure the armour you are referring to, once you fall down a pit and see it lying behind a seemingly locked gate, cannot be gotten to, until you explore the dungeon below completely and find the secret to get in there. Don't forget some locked gates aren't gates, they are just bars preventing you from moving into that area and cannot be removed or opened, need to find another way around. But at least you know something is there, so make a note on the map.

Is that the one you can see through the bars of a portcullis but can't get to?

If so:
you find some stairs on the next level down that lead back up to it (i.e. two levels down from the pit you jumped into)

More info:
it's in the Hall of Fire, level 6. A hidden switch in the corridor with the face that spits fireballs at you

Just waiting at the top of the stairs to level 7 now. Going well with my new party.

But damn, plate armour is heavy.

My front row fighter who's now in plate cuirass, boots and gloves (with a chitin helm and carrying a battle-axe) can basically carry two torches, a few alchemy ingredients and a couple of flasks before becoming encumbered.

Think I needed more strength on her - but she's supposed to be a damage soaking/evading tank rather than damage dealer. Oh well. Guess she won't be getting any more plate, and I hope I don't find anything else heavy that I want to carry...
