But i would love to see amd offer a good alternative to intel.

Someone's always got too be slower and as long as it's only a little slower while offering more cores I think it'll do fine.
They probably spend a lot of time discussing new ideas with colleagues & peers then get the urge to implement them in a suitable product. Like that paper you mentioned, he probably couldn't let it lie.
