Hi all,

I'm looking to get a new laptop and the Lenovo Y510p seems to fit the bill. I will be using it for: college work, video editing (Adobe Premiere, etc.), HD video watching and other similar things.

Is this a good choice, or should I be going for something else? I don't want anything larger than 15 inches, so it is at least a little bit portable.

The specs of the Y510p are:
Intel Core i7-4700MQ 2.4GHz
15.6-inch FHD display
8GB of RAM (Amazon seems to be wrong - it says 12GB but Lenovo don't sell a 12GB model)
NVIDIA 755M 4GB (which I think is SLI)
Windows 8.1 Home Premium

Thanks :).

What's your budget and is it the physical size of a 17inch or the weight you're worried about in terms of portability?

Given the price this laptop seems too good to be true. The only feature it lacks is touch screen.

Quad core i7, SLI and 16GB RAM for around £800? Why does everyone bang on about Dell XPS's and Macbook Pro's when these are around?

What's the catch?

I think rather than it coming with SLI as standard they say it's available if you use the ultrabay for another graphics card rather than an optical drive/hard drive/extra fan, although there's so many configurations under one model number that I may be wrong and that particular one comes with SLI already.

My, Mum has a Lenovo tablet and the specs for it far outweigh the tablets around the £200 mark, stuff like Samsung and Google, and the Lenovo cost her £120.

Maybe they are just pricing honestly or they are lowballing because of being an unknown company? I've never heard of them until my, Mums tablet and if I wanted 1 myself I would have gone to Samsung, Google or HTC. Probably still would even though Lenovo gives way more your money.

Lenovo is IBM (at least they bought their pc business).
They make some nice stuff, but they also make some not so nice stuff.

Have you looked at their Ultrabook range?

I'm getting a Lenovo Yoga tablet/laptop thingy to play with next week.

just make sure that if you get the y510p and ever plan on using SLI, that you order the SLI model.

From what I have read on the Lenovo forums although you can buy the 2nd GT750m graphics card it will not work if it is installed in a Y510P laptop that only had one graphics card when sold. I know this sounds stupid, but there are loads of people who have bought them and they wont work.

Lenovo support appears unable and unwilling to help

it is believed that the BIOS is different on model that comes with two GT750 cards prebuilt

Best of luck, I was planning to buy one, but this has put me off, this and the fact that it used to have GT755M cards, but they have downgraded it to GT750M cards, but the prices didn't drop

Me too, I also keep looking at the XPS15, I like it, but I would love a more powerful graphics card option.

All I want is a light weight, 2.5kg 15" laptop with a gt760m or 765m graphics card, but they just do not exist.

I had hoped that with the release of thunderbolt, ATI or Nvidia would have created external GPU's. This would be ideal for when you want a more intensive gaming experience.

Touchscreen wouldn't be of any use to a gamer or power user so why waste money on including the hardware when they can spend the money elsewhere in the spec.
It's a pity you've discounted 17" ones as the MSI GS70 stealth has a good spec and only weighs around 2.5kg and can be picked up for under £1,100.

I've also been having this problem - too many laptops to choose from. Though I'm going to wait a month or so now for the new nvidia gpus to make the rounds, their performance looks good, and due to less heat, there are some tasty looking laptops coming out. Do a Google on the y510's replacement, the y50
