Lens Hiring?

Hey guys,

I've been offered a spot assisting a local collectables shop with a shoot ( David Prowse ) :D

i roughly know i need a decent portrait lens, either the 35mm 1.8 AFS or a 50mm 1.8 AFS and the costs involved put buying the lens out of reach :( so i'm looking to hire the lens for a few days instead,

can anyone recommend a good lens hire place/shop

I've done the usual google thing and seen a few good places ( imo ) but i know basically nothing about hiring lenses so, can anyone share some good experiences please :p

( and they have to be AFS due to my slightly lacklustre choice of D5000 camera lol )
 
You'll struggle hiring such cheap lenses, lensesforhire have the Sigma 50mm and Nikon 35/1.4 available but neither of the cheaper 35 and 50 1.8 options.

Lenspimp, who I've heard reasonable things about, have the Nikon 50/1.4

The trouble with hiring any of these is that hire them three times and you've pretty much paid for a new one...

No doubt people will agree with me.

Rented a wide angle 10-22 from them, returned it late too and paid the fee 5 months later. They were very friendly.

Used these guys for a 35L, very easy to deal with and they give you then lens either day to the side of your hire period to ensure you get the full time with it. Phoned them up when ordering too and the guy on the phone was very helpful, would highly recommend.

I agree, for the cheap lenses just buy. If you can-t afford the 35mm or 50mm 1.8 lenses then financially I don't think you should be hiring either.


Maybe see if you can borrow a lens from a friend.


Anyway, even the Nikon kit lens will be fine, more important will be what kind of lighting is available and what flash you are using. Even if you were to hire a fast prime you will still be wanting to use a flash or 2 really. Inside a collectables shop wont be that light I would imagine.
 
Might be worth you considering buying the lens second hand, then just selling it on again afterwards if you can't afford to keep it? You wouldn't loose much more than postage costs that way.
 
hmmm, ok,

What sort of difference would i see between the 1.8 50mm and the 1.4,

the shoot in question will be mostly done instore with Halogen strip lights overhead
Due to shop size and estimated populous in attendance, there won't really be enough room for a separate lighting set up ( brollys etc etc ) so i'm looking towards just taking the best pictures i can manage then PP afterwards if it's needed :)

I'm not technically being paid for the shoot ( not 'pro' enough for one lol + it's pretty much a learning experience if you will )
But any pictures i take i'm free to do with as i please so, and being unemployed don't really help even for 2nd hand lens prices.
 
The lenses for hire facility is awesome - I would recommend them in heart beat.

For sure it probably doesn't make sense to hire a cheap lens more than once but lenses costing upwards of £1k it's perfect business sense.
