Just picked up a 550d with 50mm 1.8 mkii and looking to pick up a lens hood.

The genuine Canon one can be had for around £20 by the looks of it but there are Uwinka versions with the adapter ring for a fiver.

Is it worth paying the extra or will cheap do for this lens?

Cheers

I buy all of my hoods off eBay for a quid or two and have never had a problem with them :). They feel slightly cheaper but to be honest personally I am not too bothered about the build quality of a hood.

As above, go for a third party one.

Shouldn't be an issue with the nifty fifty but for other lenses, particularly wide angle zooms, make sure the hood you get resembles the official one. Some of them are certain shapes and have cut outs etc to stop them appearing in the frame at the wide angle and vignetting.

I've always gone for official ones...kinda anal like that.

Good thing L glass comes with them though (they cost a fortune to replace).

The £20+ because of:

A) The name brand.
B) The inside of the hood is all felt lined which is supposed to minimise glare/reflections even more than matte plastic hoods.

I've used both official and eBay on both L and non L lenses and saw no real world difference. Saying that, I did buy the official hood for the 10-22 but only because it was a bit of a bundle bargain :p

I normally like to go official but when the lens only cost £60 I think a cheapo will do for now.

Will probably get the Canon one when I get my 17-55 though.

Or be cheaper and go here http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/

OK, the branded are felt lined, which is promoted as to reduce glare, as it the reason L lenses in the main are white to help reduce internal heat................always makes me wonder why camera bodies are black if heat is so much of a problem.

The Ebay items will be fine, you can always line them with felt if they dazzle you lol

I've got a cheapo clapsable rubber hood on both my 28mm and 50mm primes and also on my ancient 70-210mm f4 never had a problem with any of them and the clapsable nature of them makes them really quick and easy to use. To be honest though for the 50mm the lens hood isn't reallt necessat 99% of the time.

The fact canon don't include hoods with all their lenses and charge such ridiculous amounts for them is one of my pet hates it just seems so unnecesarily cheapskate of them.

Official hoods will most likely also have a lining or other means to further reduce flare, 3rd party options don't always have this. I'd also stay clear on hoods that attach via clips, the 3rd party ones I bought for an 85mm f1.8 were rubbish and would hardly stay on. The Canon version has no issues. Generally though the 3rd party ones make sense.
