Obviously useage varies dependant on the lens itself but i wanted to ask about when its good to use one, when not and also if different shapes have different factors.

if no one can be bothered to comment if theres an online write up on them that i haven't found i'd appreciate the link.

thanks

i like to use a lenshood on all times on lenses that don't have a recessed front element (50mm 1.8 does for example) as it is fantastic protection for the lens. my 85mm has a huge front element and the lens cap doesnt leave it unless the hood is on.

I use it more for that than anything.

The two i used as an example next to each other:

My biggest front element, and in turn, my lens most succeptible to flare :

There is a built in (small) hood that you can see here. However, I can't use a bigger hood, or else I will get vignetting. This is something you need to be aware of. It's more of an issue with wider lenses.

Any particular reason you aren't using UV filters on your lenses, Tom?

i don't see the point in them. You need an expensive one not to degrade image quality too much, and i use lens hoods...and im careful :)

I always use the lens hoods on my lenses, like Tom I would rather not add another piece of glass (UV Filter) with the potential to degrade image quality.

Plus it makes the lenses look bigger :)
