Hi,
Right I'm finally going to start to upgrade my lenses at the end of this month. I mostly do landscape shots so the lens being fast is not so much of an issue. The 2 I think I'll get are:

Canon 70-300 USM MIII
&
Sigma 18-125mm f3.5-5.6

I'll only be able to get the one first but these are the 2 main lenses I plan to use for the next 6 months (and then hopefully get something a little better). I think from the last couple of months I will use the sigma the most so that will be bought first. Anybody got any alternatives at roughly the same budget that are worth having a think about?
Cheers

If you have to get either of those I personally would go for the sigma as you said you would be doing landscape shots (your going to need a wide angle for that).

How about a 10-20mm or 17-40mm?

How about the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 instead of the 18-125? Faster, and probably will be the better of the 2. Also has a very useful psuedo-macro mode thrown in.

Cheers I just had a look and that Sigma 17-70 and its got some great reviews, the only thing is I was thinking of getting lenses that overlapped due to the drop off in focus at the extremes. Mind you if that is as good as the reviews say it should be ok.

Uh what about the Canon? Sigma and Tamron have a lens in that range as well so has anyone seen any comparisons?

I think you need to have another think about what you want the lense for. Do you want it primarly for landscape work or do you want a general lense. If your looking at a general lense then you want a large zoom range like the sigma you mentioned. If you want just a lanscape lense then i would focus on a lense with less zoom range, as they will generally offer better image quality, wider appeture and lower price then lense with a longer zoom range.

For a general lense i would look at

Canon 17-85mm IS
Sigma 17-70mm

if your looking at landscape lense then
Tamron 18-50 F2.8
or for more money Canon 17-40mm F4 and the 17-55mm F2.8

The canon 70-300mm you mention is completly impractical for landscape work.

Would the Sigma 18-200 f3.5-6.3 OS be any good?

Seems to be good value.

It's nice and wide but should give a decent zoom capability too.

Would be interested to hear from anyone that's used one. :)

The wide angle lens will get used a lot more - hence why it will be the first I will buy. The kit lens is 18-55 and I don't often need any wider. The 75-300 would be for the times when I want to isolate a subject that is difficult to get too. I have already 3-5 shots I will want to take with where I need the 300mm as the view points are quite far away.

If your under the assumption that I will only be getting the one lens then I assure you I know I need both a wide angle and a zoom lens.

Its a little out of my price range, when I win the lottery on friday I will consider it ;P

The sigma is about £200 and the Canon about £120 from well known places that I cant mention. The 18-125 is about £165

If I were you, I would go for the Sigma 10-20 for the landscape work, then maybe something around the 70-200/300 range for zoom stuff, using your kit lens as a fill in, untill at a later date maybe you can get 17-70 as a replacement for the kit lens.

If you look at most pro's shooting landscapes they do use the 17-40, but on full frame cameras so they do not have the crop factor, so you using the 10-20 on a crop camera will give you the a similar range.
