First Canon I had was the 350D, so aside from the 18-55mm kit lens, I then bought:
- Sigma 70-300mm
- Peleng 8mm Fisheye
When I moved up bodies a few years later, it's gone in this order:
- 24-105 f/4
- 70-200 f/2.8
- 50mm f/1.4
- 1.4x iii Tele Convertor
- 24-70 f/2.8
- 16-35 f/4
The 70-200 is probably my most used lens, but then I shoot a lot of sports, event and portraits which it is ideally suited for.
The standard zooms are great for travel and walking about. I'm a bit torn now though, because the 24-105 has a good range, but the 24-70 is so much sharper, but has a higher weight penalty when walking around.
The 50mm is good for street photography and when you just want one simple lens. I personally never really got on with it on crop sensors though, it's too tele. It's very different on a full frame sensor, so if you are thinking of buying one for crop only, I'd go for a 35mm with hindsight.
Having only recently bought the 16-35 as of about two weeks ago, I now feel that I'm pretty much covered across a wide focal range and don't feel there is anything further I need currently.
Obviously so much comes down to personal preference as to whether you prefer zooms or primes, and ultimately what you will be shooting.
