Lens Purchase - What Order Do You Use ?

First Canon I had was the 350D, so aside from the 18-55mm kit lens, I then bought:

- Sigma 70-300mm
- Peleng 8mm Fisheye

When I moved up bodies a few years later, it's gone in this order:

- 24-105 f/4
- 70-200 f/2.8
- 50mm f/1.4
- 1.4x iii Tele Convertor
- 24-70 f/2.8
- 16-35 f/4

The 70-200 is probably my most used lens, but then I shoot a lot of sports, event and portraits which it is ideally suited for.

The standard zooms are great for travel and walking about. I'm a bit torn now though, because the 24-105 has a good range, but the 24-70 is so much sharper, but has a higher weight penalty when walking around.

The 50mm is good for street photography and when you just want one simple lens. I personally never really got on with it on crop sensors though, it's too tele. It's very different on a full frame sensor, so if you are thinking of buying one for crop only, I'd go for a 35mm with hindsight.

Having only recently bought the 16-35 as of about two weeks ago, I now feel that I'm pretty much covered across a wide focal range and don't feel there is anything further I need currently.

Obviously so much comes down to personal preference as to whether you prefer zooms or primes, and ultimately what you will be shooting.

This seems like a good place to ask -
I've got an 1100D with the 18-55mm IS II kit lens and I'd like to look at getting another lens, I've been looking at the 55-250mm IS II or the STM. I wanna try some candid photography maybe so a bit more zoom than 55mm seemed a good idea, is that right?

Started in June with a 2nd Hand 650D that came with a 50mm f1.8.

THen a weeks or two later bought the 18-55 STM for a good price.

Liking the combination. The 50 tends to stay on when I'm out taking photos of people, the 18-55 goes on for the flexibility. Can't decide where to go next either. I'd love to have a play with some landscape work and some long exposure night time light painting type stuff, so the 10-18mm really appeals.

Also planning on taking a holiday in Iceland at christmas, where I want to see the northern lights and go whale watching. 10-18 then becomes a must, but what zoom?! I do keep looking at the canon 55-250 STM, but not sure it's quick enough, and the prices of most of the zooms faster than that make me clench a little!

40mm 2.8 STM also seems like it could be fun, but not sure if it would offer me anything the 50mm doesnt really.

2006 onwards:
Bought 400D - with kit lens
Bought 50mm f1.8 - as it was recommended
Bought 40D - for a better body
Bought Sigma 10-20 - f4-5.6 to try shooting wide
Bought Tamron 17-50 - f2.8 for better indoor shots and focussing, replacement kit lens
Bought Sigma 70-200 - f2.8 for distance and fast shooting
Sold 50mm f1.8 - wasn't been used, Tamron covered this better
Sold 400D + kit - needed the cash
Bought 5DII - full frame goodness
Sold 40D + Tamron 17-50 f2.8 - needed cash
Sold Sigma 10-20 - full frame
Bought Tamron 28-75 f2.8
Bought Canon 24-70L f2.8 - only 2 days after Tamron, kept both for backup. Prefer the Tamron to be honest.
Bought Sigma 85mm f1.4 - lovely lens
Bought Canon 7D - Secondary body needed for video
Bought Canon 35L f1.4 - Always wanted one
Bought Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 - Missed this lens, a lot of my favourite shots used it
Bought Canon 100L Macro - it was cheap, why not. My first IS lens
Bought 60D - Backup body for video

Not bought anything new in nearly 18 months, was tempted to downsize but I'm using the kit more again.

No plans to change any of the lineup until the 5D3 drops in price a bit, 2 bodies + primes for general shooting with a wide backup, zooms are used for when filming and on tripods.

F2.8 Lenses (tamrons) did more for my shooting than any other upgrade £ for £, now I use primes a lot more. Still use zooms if I know I want to go wider or further afield but that isn't often.

Dropped my canon gear as it was film based and went with Nikon.

Currently using a D7100 [ loving it ] with a 80-200 f2.8 mm no vr lens
50mm
10-24mm lens,
Kit 18-110 lens [ really not good at all ]

all Nikon.

Would love a 70-300 f2.8 lens but the cost is too much for me. May go for a x1.4 convertor but it will not work with the 80-200 [ too old ] lens.

No flash yet but most of my shots are of clouds / buildings ect. So right now, not needed.

There is no such lens as a 70-300mm f/2.8. The closest is a sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 . 70-300mm f/5.6 are much cheaper
