i'm not toally convinced the lens would have been damaged but i'd like to think that the filter didn't die in vain :(

it was damaged when i was carrying it in hand luggage becasue it would be safer for me to look after it ;) :o camera was in a camera case inside a rucksack. funny that i dont remember jumping up and down on the bag but hey these things happen i guess.

anyone else cracked a few filters in the past?

I've never used filters (aside from Circular Polarisers)- just lens hoods.

My lens hoods are all scratched and whatnot, but I think thats just general use, not great big scrapes.

Altough I managed to truly destroy my first lens hood last month. The front petal of the hood bent inwards. Looked very cool, but you could see it vignetting so it went in the bin.

On my 17-35 hood you can no longer read any of the text apart from this 'Ca -8 CAN IN . ma e in japan' So if anyone knows where to find an original replacement (incase I want to re sell - scruffy hood not look like its been looked after - it has) - email in trust. :p

You should have wrapped it up in your spare muscle vest mate that would have saved it.:D:D:D.

id go for the climate change option.

:D funny man Joker.

na you could tell from the cracks that it took an impact from the side, one little piece fell out and the whole lot just collapsed.

haha yeah, snowboarding with binky, he came back in one piece!!

it was him who found it broken actually, he asked if he could have a look at the camera so he took it out and had a priceless look on his face. i only planned on using it for one day so lucky the lens was unmarked and undamaged in anyway. goes to show the cameras and lenses are pretty tough :)

Was about to ask whether you'd not used a lens cap then saw this - tbh I doubt the filter helped "save" the lens to any real degree with such a side impact.

PS. The lyrics in your sig are wrong ;)

you know ppl have said that before, and ive changed the damn thing twice already. guess it depends on what lyric website someone decides to use?? :D

thats why i allways have a filter on my lens, because you have to think what would have happened if that was the Lens

 Did the broken glass scratch your lens at all?

This is a major issue with people using UV filters for protection. If the UV filter smashes like that then it can and will scratch your front lens element, at the very least some of the coatings.

This is also why I favour the highest quality filter, as cheap filters have cheap unstrengthened glass which will shatter.

no damage to the lens at all. when i unscrewed it, it was fully intact, and even made the flight home without the glass falling out. all the glass fell out when i dropped it on the table at home.

i didn't think hoya filters were considered that cheap? certainly a lot cheaper ones around , any recommendations? to be fair it was hit at it's weak spot at the side.

bottom line is the lens is insured so i wont lose sleep :)
