hi, summat im not happy about, i have to rant.

my wife owns a 2000 audi a6 1.8t quattro, its a good car an dshe kept windin me up because it was faster than mine, so i went and bought a car i have been after for ages, a nice 2003 cupra r.

i did an engine check on both the cars to see what the differences were between the two as they are basically the same lump, here is what i found;

my car=2003 cupra r, engine manuf date is 31/1/97 WTF!
my wifes is a 2000, engine manuf date 08/08/99

my car if 3 years newer and my engine is three years older! im not happy! my engine must have been stashed in some factory for 6 years before it got used!

i feel violated.

It doesn't take Einstein to work out that the 20VT is used in quite a bit of the VAG range. What are the engine codes? Is yours a BAM? :)

no its the amk

So its the 210PS with the stronger conrods.

Anyway, the 210 and the 225 are both mappable to the same thing anyway (give or take).

It wasn't going to be a BAM unless it was 53 plate or newer.

Why does it matter lol.

It's just an engine thats sat somewhere for a while. You'd be amazed at what gets found at car plants. Eg Unsold cars in the car park that they stopped making 18months ago

There was a showroom condition mint Cortina recently "found" at one of the ford dealerships IIRC.... I'll look for pics

I think that's bad, i'd expect a new engine with a new car.

In the space of 6 years they can find a million improvements to make to an engine to improve things such as reliability. I'd be gutted if I bought a new car and got a 1997 engine.

However the 1.8T unit really hasn't changed all that much.

Plus the date of manufacture probably relates to the block and not the actual engine build.

It is new - previously unsold and unused.

But it's the smae engine as one made in 2002 so this isn't relevant.

Don't see what the problem would be? If the engine hasn't been used, and is a new engine still, unless the design for the block changed over that time, but doubt that. If it is just the block date, you've got hundreds of other components that are probably years newer and more important anyway in the engine.

As the others have said, it's just the block. Just a big lump of alloy. Everything else will be brand new.

Can you be sure that there arnt any tweaks and improvements made to the manufacturing process over the course of 5 years? Not a bit tweaked, a part strengthened, a new testing procedure added?

Yeah I think they moved from an wood block to alloy between the centuries

Well we don't really know what's happened to the thing in its lifespan, if a stamping of when the block was cast was added, it could have been years before it was ground and polished, rebored / machined + extra finishing, or quality checked before the assembly line.

As most large manufacturers work to a Just in Time manufacturing system, I'd guess that the engine was built and shipped a couple of weeks at the longest before the car was assembled. That's only a guess though.

And a very valid guess too. An alternative may be it was released from spares stock to cover a temporary shortage of that type maybe?
