Lepsons wheel refurbishment.

Just an update on my experience with Lepsons now. I contributed to this thread about my experience from last Sept 9th last year when I took my BMW F11 wheels in to get them refurbished at Lepsons.com. The wheels looked great but the centre caps didn't fit as there was too much paint on the wheels. They offered me 10% off to take the car with them not fitting or to clean the paint out to make the caps fit. I went back and picked the car up two days later with the caps now fitting into the recess, although I was slightly dubious as to how well you can clean paint out on newly refurnished wheels.

Anyway June this year I had a tyre replaced due to a bulge in the sidewall and when the wheel was put on the balancing machine the paint around the centre hole cracked and a lump chipped off. Lepsons agreed to redo this wheel due to the original issues. Jump fwd to 1 year and 1 week after the wheels were refurbed and I notice that the rear wheels now have damaged centre caps, the alloy has blown in the centre cap and the wheels themselves have loads of pitting and damage where the caps fit, not all in the same place as the damage on the caps. The wheels have only done about 5k miles since the refurb and they haven't been removed since Lepsons had the car, in fact only one wheel had been previously off the car before they had it in Sept Last year. The caps are damaged where someone has levered a screwdriver behind them to remove them and with time water has got in around the edge and blown them.

I have spoken to Lepsons and the reply I have had is
"Many thanks for your email and for forwarding the photos. Unfortunately this is not a warranty issue as this looks like chips in the paintwork where the centre cap has tried to be removed, rather than a case of flaking paint. We would have course be very happy to see the wheels for ourselves to verify this, if you wish to call in with them at some point. I do appreciate that paint had to be removed from the centres when your centre caps were fitted originally but this is not unusual. It is necessary for centre caps to fit tightly, otherwise they would rattle and possibly fall out and it is usually necessary for paint to be removed from a newly refurbished wheel before fitting the centre caps.

As a good will gesture, we refurbished a wheel for you free of charge after it was damaged by tyre fitters back in June. If you decide to have one or two of your wheels refurbished again, as a good will gesture I can offer 10% discount off our retail price. Should you wish to take advantage of this offer, please make reference to this communication when booking your wheels in with us."

To say I'm a bit miffed is putting it lightly, I paid good money (£525)for what I thought was a quality job and it looks like now I've had no better product than what a £45 per wheel mobile fitter would have done. The offer of me popping in isnt any good as its 140 mile round trip.

Whats other peoples opinions on this?

They're rubbish. I had exactly the same problem - had a wheel refurbed at vast expense, looked amazing, but the finish wasn't durable at all. The other 3 wheels were refurbed by a backstreet guy who picked them up in the back of an old Ford Cougar, and yet they've actually worn far better.

I didn't bother contacting them, because I knew they'd just fob me off and I honestly can't be bothered.

Eugh, any company who had any pride in their word would not do this. If it was my company I'd have apologised profusely, stripped it down and started again with pictures to prove it.

Lets see the pictures.

I'd always heard that Lepsons had an impeccable reputation for quality, nearly approached them myself when the wheels on my MX5 needed doing (but never got around to it before selling the car). And as I'm considering changing the colour of my current wheels, I was going to give them a shout. But after hearing your experience, and some others here (geekman, Voxination), I think I'll give them a miss altogether.

That's why I took the car 70 miles to them. I will take pictures with the centre caps off tomorrow and post them up. Will be interesting to see what they did in there.

Be interested in this as I am planning on getting my wheels sorted at some point and found these guys, but had Vox and a few other warn me about there quality.

I'm picking the XJ6 up from Jaguar tomorrow so I'll see if I can add a few photos to show the difference between the Lepsons and non Lepsons wheels.

Depending on how far you are willing to travel for the job, there are 2 wheel specialists here in Fareham who do excellent jobs. Xtreme Alloys and The Wheel Specialist. The former will even pick up and drop off the wheels free if you're local (though I see you're not :p).

The Wheel Specialist have a couple of places closer to me, no prices on there site though :(

Don't have a spare set of wheel either so will need to be dropping the car off (yay for more cost).

Sadly, it doesn't matter how good wheel refurbers say they are, or appear to be, a refurbed wheel will never, ever, be as good as a day 1 oem factory finish. I've had a very positive experience with my local wheel company, but even then after a bad winter, the paint has bubbled and I've invariably hit the odd kerb. It's just the nature of the beast really

RimTek in Gravesend do a 1 day service and I've not heard anything bad about them. I think Geekman/Vox may have used them?

If the paint is so thick possibly sounds like they didn't strip the old paint off the wheel and just sprayed over the top. Maybe a rush job?

I think if they do a proper job then there's no reason it cant be as good as a factory finish. I had my 4 wheels fully refurbished by The Wheel Specialist Manchester around two years ago now and the finish now is as good as the day it left them, bar the odd stone dent in the paint (hasnt chipped!). I haven't exactly been too hot on keeping them clean recently either and cover 350-450 miles a week, so they've been pretty abused.

For reference - The Wheel Specialist Manchester - Full refurbishment (paint stripped completely), 4x 19" wheels, £354.

Diamond alloys in Northolt are the best near me! I've not used them myself but friends have and they've been genuinely excellent (though pricier than usual cheap places). They're used by Mercedes and BMW predominantly.

Had the rear wheels off today to have a look at what is happening. It turns out when they kept the car for two more days to sort the centers out they just rubbed them back to bare metal put the caps in and left it ( i specifically asked that they wouldn't just scrape the paint out and the wheels would be protected and was assured this was the case). The aluminium has corroded causing the damage to the paint and the center trims. Also from the picture you can see that the paint is really thin and worn away where the wheel has small design holes in it. So even without the center cap problem they haven't been finished properly.

I've emailed the pictures to Lepsons now to see what they say now I have proved it isn't because the caps have been levered off and damaged.

Just had a phonecall From Lepsons and they couldn't see the damage very well from the previous photos I sent. They said as soon as they saw these they have agreed to refurbish the three remaining wheels from the original job and replace the center caps too. So good result and good CS in the end. They going to send a courier when I want to pick the wheels up from me.

Do they provide loan wheels so that you can drive the car in the mean time? Or do people just leave their car unusable on stands whilst their wheels are refurbed?

The place I used gave me a loan car.

I left the car with them the first time but this time im taking the wheels off and leaving the car on stands.
