Less MMO, more RPG

I'm looking for an RPG that has a nice slow progression of gear and loot(zero to hero), like an MMORPG, but with the story and quality questing of a good CRPG. It needs to be fairly modern and have a typical fantasy theme. I've played Skyrim to death already, so not that. Witcher 2 looks good but there doesn't seem to be a lot of variation in gear(or am I wrong?). Anything else worth trying?

kingdoms of amalur.

I actually thought it was like playing a single player mmo when I was playing it.

I played Kingdoms of Amalur for a couple of hours but I got bored quite quick. Something about it felt so bland and generic. It's very close to what I'm after, I just wish it had a bit more soul. Maybe I need to give it another try...

I kind of want to say Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic but I'm not sure if the combat is what you are after and I only played 15 hours of it so I don't know how the gear progressions keeps on going.

Edit: And it isn't modern

Yeah I played KotOR back in the day. Great game. Wish there was a modern fantasy version. The gear progression was good and the questing was epic.

Star Wars : The Old Republic

Yes, it's an MMo but each class has massive story driven content, progression and consequences. Think of it as KOTOR III with eight different stories to play through. You don't even have to team up with other people and nearly all your class quests are in your own instances with no-one else to bother you.

Dragon Age is the closest thing I've found to a fantasy version of KOTOR. As mentioned the gear is a bit limited, but the storyline and tactics make up for that.

Drakensang River of Time.

No idea if it's like an MMO but it's a party based RPG like Dragon Age with quests, loot and different classes of playable characters.

I think it's on Steam now.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. It is pretty much an RPG these days (or at least has strong RPG elements), the story is fantastic and there is nice gear progression, very closely resembling Far Cry 3. FC3 is another recommendation, although neither are traditional RPGs.

I would say Witcher 2 has loot and gear, maybe not as much as others but it has character progression a good story plus its more mature and gritty then most RPG's.

Or if you are looking for a more Diablo type RPG then Path of Exile is free on steam and worth a try. Plus it has a more MMO feel then others, i believe it has Arena.

You should try LoTR Online or Age of Conan.

Yes both are MMO's, but you can play them both through to max level pretty much solo. LoTR especially has some great story arcs in it, whilst AoC is good for a change from the usual high fantasy stuff. Both have plenty of shiny loot to collect along the way as well.
