Got my X2 up on MM at the mo, and im thinking of replacing it with a venice 3500+.

At this present time i dont think id notice to much differene in games in terms of the CPU as im assuming i could get it to 2.6 easily.

But as im planning a 2nd 7900GT im sure that the extra gfx power will make up for the slght drop in cpu power.

Then i plan to get a better cpu in a few months, maybe conroe.

My personal opinion is that you should get the best GPU you can and back it up with a lesser CPU that overclocks well as big overclocks are far easier with CPUs.

Better GPUs also have the benefit of being able to put more eye candy on regardless of CPU.

Totally agree with Jokester here, a cheap CPU thrashed to an inch of its life with a decent card is a winner.

I'm using an Opteron 144 with an X1800XT 512Mb and its a beast.

7900GT SLI will result in a bottleneck at the CPU with an A64 3500, but I think that the result will be better gaming performance than your current kit in almost all cases. IOW, I think that the increase in graphics card performance will more than offset the reduction in CPU performance in almost all circumstances.

Would depend on the resolution he was using, at 1280x1024 it's not worth SLI in my opinion. 1920x1024 on the other hand SLI will give a big boost to SLI enabled games.

Im at 1440x900 on an acer 1916w

I'd say at that res' SLI won't do you any huge favours. Keep hold of the X2 and clock it, you should get at least 200-400Mhz extra out of it. The 7900GT should be able to handle anything at that res'.

I also agree with what the fella is saying here :)

using an SLI setup seems to cause more CPU overhead demands, im not sure why but i know it does, i would not recommend getting a slower CPU as you will not realise the full potential of your SLI setup with a 3500+ imo

I pretty much agree with what people are saying about combining a mid range CPU with a high end graphics card.

I have noticed though that some games are a lot more CPU intensive than others, obviously when lots of calculations are needed to update whats happening.

Well it looks i may have got lucky, ive been given a PSP giga pack that i dont want, so im gonna flog it and use the dosh for a 2nd gfx card and keep my X2 :D
