Peta requests memorial for more than 1,000 chickens killed in M62 lorry crash

“Peta will be asking to place a memorial sign for the chickens who died in the lorry crash near Warrington this morning.

“We hope our memorial will remind people that chickens are not just body parts to pick out of buckets but individuals with feelings who, like us, don't want to die in an upturned lorry or at an abattoir.”

Words fail me. This story also made me spit tea all over my desk.

Taking into account the fact 750 million birds are killed per year in the UK I don't really think memorial for 1000 chickens will really make much of an impact.

I can see the 'logic' in that they don't see animals differently to humans & if 1000 people were killed in a car crash we would most likely create some form of memorial - but if that's the case then suggesting something which is only going to create laughter & ridicule to the organisation (further entrenching people against the general message) is unlikely going to be that helpful for anyone or anything.

I don't see anything wrong with their idea, it's a symbolic gesture consistent with what PETA stands for. Our treatment of sentient animals is barbaric, it won't go on forever and while PETA's stance is laughable now, it won't be in a few decades.
