So, needed some employment to get some money in obviously so a friend recommended me to where he was working, got the job etc mainly sales, printing etc.

Started in the 13th of January, and was dismissed on 24th of January.

So basically, the industry I was in was dieing out severely, and made even worse when a national news story broke out about the industry ripping off some school for over £700,000 worth of lease agreement and such, so to do our job was made even harder now, booking meetings alone. It's safe to say, the WHOLE office was struggling with selling etc. The office was 8 people, and 3 more girls in accounting. No one was doing well with booking meetings alone as it was January, no one has money to spend etc etc. Now here's what happened;

Now, tuesday around 10:30am, the director came in the office and basically gave EVERYONE an ultimatum of 30 days to "buck their ideas up" or he's going to have to let people go. Now, this wasn't motivational at all, and I felt even worse for the 3 women in sales, who had children etc basically told we have 30 days (I couldn't see anything changing in the industry within that time to make our lifes easier). Come lunch time, I popped into town and went into Reed recruitment just to see about other work (being told we had 30 days didn't put me in a good mindset) had a meeting then came out go back to the office and ate my lunch. Then, got called to the directors office, and basically sat me down and said, one of the managers has just seen you in Reed recruitment, 2 hours after i told you to buck your ideas up kinda thing, I havn't been performing that well (NO ONE had been performing well, even the top sales guys) also baring in mind this is the first time he's mentioned i've been slacking and said he's going to have to let me go?! I think it's safe to say it's based on the fact he heard of me going into Reed recruitment but surely that's not sufficient?! Especially to let go straight away ... ?

Just received a letter in the post from the company about my dismissal and it states "As stated at our meeting, you have failed to meet the targets set for telephone calls (NO specific target was set for telephone calls either) and made no appointments. We did discuss this with you when you were given time to improve your performance but you have shown no improvement and no desire to improve", ermmm so I was given 2 hours to improve as that morning was the FIRST time i was told about performance?!

What to do?! I know I was only there for 2 weeks but still ...

Sadly you have a probation period (normally about 12 weeks), in this time, employers can send you out the door for any reason.

Are you part of a union? If not, its abit late now, but if you are, contact them for advice.

My company are facing the same outcome, but luckily for me, Ive been there almost a year and theres plenty of other staff that under perform, not fully trained or still within probationary period.
Sadly I need more hours, 8 hours just isnt enough to get back and forth college every day and make sure my daughter doesnt go without.

Like you say, you were only there for 2 weeks, unfortunately that pretty much means you have no rights in this situation. Chances are you would have been the first to go anyway due to the short period you were there.

Think of it this way. Do you really want to work for a company that treats its staff like that?

Yeah i did think it was the way, i know for a fact the company won't last if that's their attitude, and their moving offices to the company building that went bust (the ones that ripped of the school!)

They were looking for excuses to fire people, you gave them one in a way... but you werent there for long so would have gone anyway. Last in, first out, as they say.

if they are treating you like that after 2 weeks and they're as you say struggling to sell anything, i would suggest just moving on. As people pointed out, with 2 weeks only, you have little to no rights.

How exactly has the company gone from being busy enough to require hiring new staff (OP), and then two weeks later not having enough business to start firing? Seems a bit strange.

They arn't going anywhere, I find it funny that he bought a previous printing company down the road who went bust and that address is associated now with that national news story about the company ripping off a school! Not a good move at all, oh well.

If it were me, i'd respond to them telling them what you've just told us. It won;t make any difference, but i'd certainly want my say.

Then torch his car! :)

Unless there is something explicitly in your contract, you aren't going to get anywhere I'm afraid, you having been working there long enough.

Not worth fighting over. If you had been there a significant time and the company was having a bad month you could most likely give reasonable explanation, or at least think of one, as to why you visited reed. However after 2 weeks and your boss showing himself to be a total bandit I wouldn't bother.
