Let's Talk Bike Security!

Any of my decent bikes are either never out of my sight or are locked up at work in a caged off area in the underground car park on our secure campus (You need to go though three security checks / gates to get there).

If I'm leaving my bike out of sight (like at the train station) it's the £50 hybrid that I now run as single speed because the gears packed up. I need to get myself another cheap fixed road bike.

The best security is being less desirable than the one enxt to it.

I commute everyday but always bring my bike into the office with me.
I was told once to leave it outside in the bike rack by the receptionist, but politely pointed out that my bike was worth more than his car at the time :D

When out on a ride, if I stop off somewhere for food or drink, then I have a good secure lock which I've had for many years.
Even then I will sit outside with the bike in my sight.

I have three bikes worth £1,600 and upwards, and they never leave the house unless I'm on them. My commuting bike is the cheapest of those three and it gets stored in my house and I take it into my office at work. Still, they're all post-coded and registered on Immobilise.com in case.

I have a cheap rusty piece of crap (albeit a decent reynolds frame) for cycling into and around Cambridge.

My bike is 95% of the time in my flat or locked to the bike rack in a gated mews development at work. I rely on an Abus Granit X-Plus 54 as the main lock, and a cable for the front wheel.

I still worry about my bike, and especially the saddle/seat post when the bike is left in public. If it were a regular thing, I would probably add another Abus U lock, despite it being another couple of kilos to carry about!

I use my Boardman for my commute but fortunately I'm able to keep it in a spare room inside (mainly so it doesn't get wet/dirty/rusty outside). If kept outside I use a Kryptonite D-Lock which I used on my previous bike but which also validates my insurance if it was nicked.

The only thing I worry about is the few hundred quids worth of accessories - saddle, bottle cages, bar etc - that can be nicked in a few minutes with a hex key.

Store mine in a garage with a Kryptonite lock attached to a 50ft ladder which in turn is chained to the wall.

Only ever comes out when I am riding it.
