Hi folks,

I have a friend who's decided he'd like to do some overclocking with his new system, and has asked me to spec him a new CPU cooler. The processor is an i5 2500K.

I settled on a budget of £25 - £30, and have had a quick look at ones in that price range. The Gelid Tranquillo comes highly recommended, however the Corsair A70 on This Week Only also looks pretty good for the money.

Was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on either of these, having never used them myself. Any other recommendations are also welcome :)

Thanks.

I have the A50, its an awesome cooler but its LOUD, the A70, I believe is even louder. If you have some quiet fans lying round I would probably go for this.

The gelid seems to be most peoples first choice and will be a good all rounder out of the box

hope this helps

Thanks for that.

It's in a Corsair 600T white, with two massive 200mm fans, so is reasonably quiet. The only other fan he has spare is a 120mm Xigmatek (?) one, so buying more fans to quiet down an already more expensive cooler isn't really an option.

Looking like it's going to be the Gelid then :)

I like my Gelid. It's pretty quiet and seems to do a good job of cooling. After 8 hrs of Prime95 on Saturday (4.5Ghz @ 1.34v under load, 1.31v idle) max temp was 69C.

A70 really isn't loud... I picked mine up second hand for a nice bargain, and run it with the standard fans but with the voltage limiter wires that come with it, I never see my 2500k go above about 50C (After intense use) however saying that don't have it overclocked...

I have the A70. It's a good cooler, keeps temps nice and low. I'm running the stock fans with the resistors and it's kinda loud. I'm probably going to change the fans in the near future as I want a near silent PC. I'd recommend it if your going to be overclocking. The noise can be reduced in the future by getting new fans but you can't improve the cooling of the Tranquillo in the long run ;)

I opted for an Arctic cooling freezer pro 13, its near silent (1350rpm max I think?)and keeps my temps low (2600k @ 4.4ghz, idle 27c, load of 49c). The temps might get higher, I havent had any real desire to torture test it to see how high it hits, my loads temps are based on gaming.

Also fits nicely into your budget: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-040-AR

be warned though, this is a pretty big cooler, I had to remove one of my 120mm side pannel fans to get it to fit.
