Over there...
Looking at treating myself to nice watch as a treat for passing my PhD.

Budget isn't astronomical sort of £500-mark.

thoughts suggestions? quite like the omega speedmaster, but price fluctuates online...

any other suggestions?

experiences with Ebay? Easy to spot a fake?

Speedmaster for £500? Maybe if it was a duffer.

For that price range I'd look at Oris, though it depends obviously if the styling / brand image appeals to you.

I've just bought myself a Fortis pilot professional automatic watch for £600 and it is very nice indeed, very good build quality and comes with steel and leather strap too.

You can also get other models for ~£500

Ferret

another vote for oris here, for £500 you should be able to get a good one from a dealer just shop around and ask for discount, you could aslo get a used seamaster for that price but it will most likely be the quartz version rather than an auto but ive had my seamaster quartz for 10 year and it still runs fine and looks brand new. It all depends on what style face your after

many thanks gents - i suggested as mnuch about the speedmaster, but offered it for style suggestions really. There is one on the bay - but it would be fair to suspect its a fake then?

Never heard of Oris, so will definately investuigate this brand of watches - thanks!

Would buying something like an Oris mean that it wouldn't really be an investment (would suspect the Omegas to at leeast hold some cash in them, but would be bought more because i like it so to speak?

For something different have a look at Archimede watches (Link)

Found them on here in another watch thread by Matblack

I've been looking at getting an Omega Plant Ocean, but like the look of these ones instead and are a lot cheaper.

wow! thanks guys - some lovely suggestions there! Need to go digging a little further then! This watch malarky could get very addictive i'm sure!

tbh your really going to struggle to get a speedmaster for £500 a if you do find one its going to be in not very good nick. its going to be the same with the main brands too all the good ones are £1000+ . as for oris, fortis holding value, compaired to your omegas breitlings and rolex's no they wont hold the value as much as these, but your should still get a good price for it aslong as you look after it.

If your not to bothered about a top name have alook at these

i was thinking of buying the Kingfisher Diver-Pro a few months back i didnt get round to ordering one as id already spent up on a few other watches :D the C4 model looks quite similar to the speedmaster style

cheers mate - i suspect as much.

Its not that i'm going to sell it per-sé, more that if i'm spending a lot of money, i want to avoid fashion brands, and over priced lines to minimise the loss. Plus, if times are ever hard in the future, be nice to know its there...

Thos are very clean looking watches, and tbh, there's one or two i would probably have as well.

I think i like the "pilot" style of watch, black face (tho this may change). Cant make my mind up on strap type - initially wanted metal (thought it would last longer), but now, not sure. I would alse desire a visible mechanism on the back - looks cool!

I think i *dont* want a chronograph, would prefer automatic (tho dont mind winding if needs be) and fancy something quite plain and timeless.

Also, does anyone know of any good watch "boxes/holders" for a few watches? Seen a few i like, and would be nice to have 3 else 4 decent watches stored somewhere. Apparently rolling ones to keep Autos going are also available?

I'm currently stalled after an MSc, under some stupid illusion that the private sector would be a good experience :(.

I have every intention of returning to do my PhD in the next few years :).

well, best of luck in whatever route you take - i'm in the private sector now after finishing - in Sales, and tbh i'm enjoying it. Maybe not the private sector thats the issue, perhaps the work you're doing specifically?

either way, best 'o' luck :)

Yeah I'm willing to hedge my bets that its the job thats causing me problems, but I just feel I'm more cut out for academia.

but I just feel I'm more cut out for academia.

takes a certain type of person! I felt i was better out in the longer term - tho very much enjoyed my time there.

As for a fake - this isnt to show off to people, its for me, a reward for working hard, that is extravagant. It may even become something i pass down to my kids or something - who knows.
