Letter sent to wrong address, got put back in the post. Where is it now?

If we (yeah I'm a Postie) get a letter come back to us with "Doesn't live here" etc on it then it's Killed Off.

We mark the letter with blue crayon to hide the original address and put a sticker on it with a reason it's being killed off. In this case it'll be "Addressee unknown" on it.

If there's no return address then it goes to Belfast where I believe they are legally allowed to open the letter to find out possibly who it's for (but I'm not 100% on that as I don't deal with it personally).

Who you need to contact, I'm not sure but try Customer Services and they'll point you in the right direction hopefully.

Ban the OP.

Who are you?

Thank-you.

This is why I posted on here, because I knew there would be a postie or two on here.

I called customer services and they said that they will open the letter in Belfast to try and determine who sent it. They suggested I fill out a P38 form, and send that in to help with that process.

Actually quite interesting.

If people actually just put a house number & postcode on the back of a letter/packet then you'll get it back if for any reason we can't deliver it.

You don't have to put your name & full address, just the house number & post code will mean we can find out who sent it.

I do normally do that. Bit annoyed that I didn't this time. doh.

Did the people it was delivered to write anything on the envelope ? If not it will probably be delivered back to them. If they did write 'Not known at this address' or something similar then it will be on its way to Belfast as detailed earlier.

Hi all. Anyone work for Royal Mail or might know the answer to this question?

I sent a letter to someone, I got the house number wrong and so the letter was delivered to the wrong address. I was in the area at the weekend, realised my mistake and went to the house where I'd addressed the letter to. The person living there had received the letter, and then because they didn't recognise the name on it - they'd put it back into a post box.

There was no return address on it, so it won't make its way back to me. Where does it go. Will they deliver it again to the 'wrong' address, or will it go back to the sorting office that it originated from? Can I get it back, or is it 'lost' now?

it'll be here in Belfast in the sorting office where all lost mail goes.
