I'm looking at buying a Lexus IS250 Sport , 2007 reg , 67k miles. Priced at £5k. I'm not really particularly clued up on cars though, good idea? bad idea? Things to watch out for ?

I did give it a test drive last night and I rather liked it, seemed to have loads of features in the car as standard, cabin did feel a little cramped compared to my current car but I could live with that.

Is it an auto, has it got multimedia nav?

Its a manual, I had read that some people were saying they found the manual a bit clunky but I found it ok when I drove it yesterday.

No multimedia nav but that's not an issue for me as I hate sat nav anyway and have never had one :)

High road tax and performance doesn't apparently match the +200BHP and MPG figures

Saying that they are a nice car, very nice inside, very solid, and reliable. I've been tempted to drive one when looking at changing cars but the tax always put me off

Yeah the tax is one band up from my current cars tax. Not a large jump but higher nonetheless.

You mention reliability, Is it a model known for reliability? I'm looking for something fairly reliable as my current car whacked me for £600 on its most recent MOT, which is what started me looking for something else.

There's no reason to buy one with a manual box and no nav unless it's super, super cheap. There are tons of SE-L variants out there with all the options on for good prices due to the aforementioned road tax issue.

Find one with the top spec and buy it.

Even if I hate nav? I have never had nav and never would. Spoke with the dealership today and turns out the tax is actually the same band as my current car, so the tax will be the same, which at least dispels that as an issue.

I've never used sat nav, I actually never would. Part of the driving experience for me is to work out the route myself and plan it on a map, or work out on a map etc where I am. It applies to all things in life, I don't like too much that does things for me which I can do myself. I don't use spellcheckers on office applications even, preferring to find out the correct spelling myself. I'm just an old fuddy duddy who prefers to do things myself.

However, I am also a very tolerant person and I have no problems with people who do like stuff like satnavs and so on, its just not in my personal tastes that's all.

How do you find the correct spelling of a word you don't realise you misspelt.?

I don't. If I don't know I have got it wrong then its wrong. I'm fine with that, cant get everything right all the time in life. I'd say more often than not though if its a word I have got wrong then I usually am unsure of the word in the first place and will check it.

If we extend this ethos to cars you should buy a 1.0 Fiat Uno with manual choke.

Not necessarily, I mean technically, if you want to take things to extremes, then I shouldn't get a car at all , because I have legs so I can walk. I also shouldn't use any office applications as I have a hand , so I should use a pen and paper. As with all things in life though, its not about extremes. However, we digress, the thread was the good and bad of this model of car and things to watch out with it, rather than the stunned unthinkable shock of someone who doesn't like nav.

I prefer non nav models too, at this age they start to look dated and generally if its not used as i never use it then its just pointless weight

I thought these were the highest tax bracket, the figures above don't seem right
