Hi all,
found this monitor whilst browsing through one of the many cebit reviews it looks amazing, it sure will add some competiton to the 20" market, i found it for sale in the USA for $499 so it should be resonably cheap i hope

http://us.lge.com/products/model/detail/computer products_lcd monitors_20 inch_L203WT.jhtml

the specs make it look like a TN but im not sure

1680 x 1050
300 cd/m2 (typical)
1400:1 (DFC)
8 ms
15-pin D-sub, DVI-D

Well, you posted a load of info along with a query regarding the type of panel used. LCD pointed you towards a thread with good info in regarding the type of panel used.

Seems kinda straightforward to me.

pic of it here as well from CEBIT:

the thread was confusing as half the people said it was an AS-IPS and other people were saying it was a P-MVA from AU optronics and then it turned into a TN  anyone any ideas which one it is

Specs for that screen are rather interesting. There are even some speculations around that it's using the TN panel ?! ... but without any particular "proof" or review it's hard to tell or relay on such info. Some users managed to get to the service menu (by powering on the monitor with the menu button pressed) and panel type is displayed as "cpt20w TN" or "LPL20 TN". Also, many users reported poor viewing angles and intensive colour banding.

Now, I wouldn't say that it's using the same panel as NEC. NEC is using the AS-IPS 6ms panel with the LG.Philips proprietary Advanced DVM 1600:1 technology (panel control circuit). Contrast & brighntess ratio for this monitor is somewhat "lower" and it's using, surprisingly, LG proprietary f-engine panel control circuit with DFC, which in theory should be something similar to the Advanced DVM + DFC. Quite confusing, have to say. It may happen that, in order to keep down the costs, they simply opted for TN panel with DFC.

For now, it may be prudent just to wait and see more reviews or information about this monitor and "confirmed" specs and technology involved. Also, I would be careful about the final monitor spec as Europe models may vary in the final production stage. Generally, LG tend to offer the different models for different market regions (similar situation as with NEC).

yeah thats what i thought, but in that link above they are the models in the USA and they think its a TN, but in japan they are being reported As some sort of 8 bit panel (s-ips or p-mva) who knows what one we will get, it will be best waiting for some solid evidence on the panel type, is their any solid evidence that the NEC is actually an AS-IPS

The NEC LCD20WGX2 is certainly an AS-IPS panel. There's a review of it at BeHardware here and NEC list it themselves as an AS-IPS panel here

the official spec of the LG L203WT was shown at CEBIT, here's a pic, certainly looks like the spec of a TN Film panel:

cheers badass, ive seen the review at tft central and i saw the screen shots which didnt onvice me it was any better than my 1970gx also do you have the panel model number for the NEC 20 widescreen and are their any other screens that use the same panel as i like the specs but not the glossy finnish

Being that LG is a partner in the IPS panel initiative and the recent development of the AS-IPS panel technology would it not make more sense for them to use their flagship product?

I’ve also read that while the Japanese market will receive a HDCP model LG USA are claming that due to “market differences” they will not have that connection.

Seems like another classic example of waiting until it’s in the shops and LG are advertising what panel they are actually using.

well LG certainly are part of LG.Philips, the panel manufacturer, but they don't just make IPS panels. They also make their own TN Film panels, and so it might well be a case of LG wanting to keep costs down and using TN Film technology (most probably one of their own panels) instead of IPS. It is a shame, but i would imagine if it is the case, there will be a different LG 20"WS monitor to follow later using the same AS-IPS panel as the NEc. Would seem logical :)
