Hello All

Can anyone guide me through a minefield?

Ok I’ve been using an old Nokia 6500 slide phone which has just packed up and I’m really out of touch with all the newer type phones.

I was interested in the LG V20 because the battery can be replaced when it dies without the need to use oxy acetylene cutting equipment to get the back off.

I also like the idea of being able to listen to FM radio but without the need to stream, my old phone used headphones acting as an aerial.

The two versions I’ve been looking at are H990DS and H918, does anyone out there know if either of these two will be suitable, at the moment I’m with EE on pay as you go also the phone will only be used in the UK.

Below is a list of what I’ve found regarding the variants but it’s nice to have confirmation from others who have already found out which is best.

See website https://www.gsmarena.com/lg_v20-8238.php#us996 it gives all the different variants.

Ie:

H990N is for Hong Kong FM Radio yes

H990DS is for Global Market FM Radio yes

H990T is for Mexico Radio No

H910 is for AT & T FM radio yes

H918 is for T Mobile FM Radio yes

LS997 is for Sprint Radio No

US996 is for US Cellular Radio No

VS995 is for Verizon Radio No

They all have a removable 3200 mha battery.

My thanks to anyone who can help me.

Clive

Just make sure the version you get supports EE 4G band other than that can't see why it wouldn't work.

I had a v20 for a few months but it got that horrible temperory screen burn in on the sides after a few months. Possible software fix.

Hello remy87

Thank you for your quick reply, do you by any chance know if the variants which support radio are referring to streaming it.
As I said on the old Nokia I just plugged headphones into it selected radio and that was it no need to stream which would cost me an arm and a leg on pay as you go.

I have a V20 H990DS. It has an FM radio and works fine on both EE and Three. I never use the radio as I prefer streaming over 4G. But I just checked it works and all you do is plug some earphones in and start the radio app.

I think it's a great phone. I did notice the screen burn mentioned above once but it went away again (apparently they all get it but it isn't a permanent burn). The battery life is quite poor too and wouldn't last a day without charging. The screen isn't as bright as OLED screens but is sufficient.

But I bought it used for similar reasons. I wanted a phone with a swappable battery. I also wanted one with infrared for a TV remote, a good camera, sdcard, second sim and the excellent audio DAC.

Overall I am very happy. I have several spare batteries and even a huge 12,000ma battery for days away from power if needed (it looks silly but works great).

My friend got the V20 phone. He bought it from france eBay but it work with EE

Battery life is rubbish. He carry 2 spare batteries with him all the time.

Rubbish phone tbh. There are better phone with bigger battery capacity out there for similar price especially the Chinese one's.

I wouldn't get it just because it has removable battery

Hello Hades

Thanks for the lowdown on the H990DS and taking the trouble to try the earphones to see if you could get the radio without the need to stream its very much appreciated.

I’d sent for a H918 advertised on eBay, I even asked the question to confirm it was that version.

The phone turned up six days ago and what did I get a VS995 absolutely useless, asking some of the sellers what variation the phone is and it’s as though you’ve asked them a trick question, fortunately its on a 30 days return so it will be heading straight back to them.

Hopefully I may be able to track down a H990DS although they seem very hard to find.

Just out of interest how long did the screen burn last, I guess it was unheard of on the old phones because they weren’t touch screen.

Thanks again for your help

Hi Wesley

As already mentioned my old phone was a Nokia 6500 Slide so you can appreciate how long I’ve owned it and during the course of its life I’ve had to fit a few new batteries because even rechargeable ones will only stand so many chargings much like a car battery and I don’t like the idea of having throw a phone away because the battery is shot, nether do I like the idea of having to heat the back up in order to get it off.

I’m not on a contract so tend to stick with a phone rather than keep changing them.

@skyhaw The burn didnt last long. Maybe a couple of days. It was where the top part of my browser is, because I had the screen quite bright on the browser for days on end. I just turned the brightness down a bit and after a fay I two I couldnt see it anymore. But no doubt it would return at some point because the phone is known for it. But it's not permanent.

Thr battery is poor though so do expect to get a couple of spares.

Stil own one and not found anything I persoannly want to change to jsut yet. The battery on mine has been pretty great..easiyl get a day or even two on a single charge with most things running and spotify.
