LGA 1700 Gets more CPU's!

In your position I would be looking at AM5 not Intel. You can pick up the 7800x3d for less than £350 now, add a decent B650E motherboard and 32Gb of DDR5 6000+ C30 and you have a efficient but powerful gaming pc that will be upgradeable for another two generations. I have been contemplating the switch myself and I am on socket 1700. I just can't stomach the ridiculous power draw of the newer Intel cpu's.

This would be a wise move IMO.

It a real pain as am right in the middle of looking at ordering a 14700k or 14900k cpu/z790 motherboard/DDR5 setup as i can't really wait 9 months or whatever for the next gen to get released :(
If I were you and couldn't wait, I'd pickup a cheap z670 board and i5/i7 12th/13th gen etc, whatever you can find a good deal on. DDR4 even, if you already have it.

No point spending top dollar on z790/14th gen when they're practically identical CPU's, just with a huge premium. They'll all be practically worthless in the coming months, Zen5 will wipe the floor. Arrow Lake remains an unknown :D

My PC usage for gaming is only around 5% of the time if that and the 7800x3d looks a lot slower for other usage compared to intel cpu's

Am really not a fan of AMD cpu's as i had them multi times over my 25+ years of having PC's and always suffered problems
And it was only a few years ago i was seeing lots of posts of people having problems with trying to get VR headsets to work with an AMD motherboard

Maybe if AMD do bring out something special i may try one again

My problem these days is am getting older pretty fast (mainly mean my eye sight and eye sight reaction time ) and would rather spend out on the top stuff now while I can still enjoy it up to a certain extent,
My days of my eye sight being fast enough and good enough for FPS is pretty much already over :(

So go for one of the cpu's that make more sense for your usage such as the 7900/7900x/7950x all of which are cheaper than their Intel counterparts. I only suggested the 7800x3d because I wrongly assumed your main usage was gaming. There is nothing wrong with AMD and any problems are in the past, a few years is a long time in pc tech. Ryzen has been their best ever cpu's and are far more energy efficient than Intel cpu's. They have also confirmed support for AM5 through to ar least 2025 so two more cpu releases.

I was in favour of waiting for the 15th Gen new socket since my 6700k is getting long in the tooth, however the requirement to then also get new DDR5 will probably make me just see what happens in the 1700 space now.

Christ maybe I'll even go back to AMD as mentioned above. My last was probably a Thunderbird!

Thing is none of those CPUs have the balance of performance of the 14700K, and the 7900(X) aren't much cheaper and generally slower outside of specific workloads, the 7950X is quite a bit more expensive while again aside from some specific workloads never really pulls away from the 14700K and in some cases is slower or only matches it.

If people want to buy AMD that is one thing, but a lot of people seem to be overlooking the 14700K, which unless AMD pull out a blinder with future AM5 support or people really needs PCI-e 5.0 beyond the GPU is by far the best buy at its price and performance point, even the 13900K and 14900K, specific workloads aside, don't really stand out against it while being a lot more expensive for usually <10% gains.
