Messed up the topic title, should be AMD Dragon :)

Welcome to my first build and build log! I've been lurking around these and other hardware forums for about a year now trying to learn as much as I can and I've finally got the money together to put together what I think will be a great rig!

Aims of Build

I want to build a powerful rig that I can use for gaming for at least a few years. I want it to be simple and tidy - but look really great too. I really love the build quality of the Lian-Li cases and the red/black theme of the Lian-Li AMD Dragon (aka the Armorsuit PC-P50R) suits my tastes perfectly.

Also since it's my first time doing this I wanted to have some good hardware to make the process of learning how to overclock my rig a bit easier and safer.

Components

First of all I'll start with a few pics of the case just to show it off a bit

The case as delivered with the components box next to it - felt really sorry for the delivery guys as they are HUGE!

Out of it's box, it is protected really well and I'll be saving the packaging for carting it about in the future

A few pictures showing off the case - the quality is mindblowing, the material looks and feels great

The rest of the components are as follow (you may notice they follow the black and red trend ;)):

Asus Maximus III Formula Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard
Geil Black Dragon 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 (1600MHz)
Intel Core i5 750 2.66Ghz (Lynnfield)
OCZ Vertex Series 30GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive
Corsair HX 650W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache
Prolimatech Mega Shadow Performance CPU Cooler
OcUK Brushed Aluminium Blu-Ray ROM Slot Loading Drive - Black
LG GH22NS50 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Here are a few photos of the bits and bobs:

Putting it all Together

Now this Lian-Li case is well known for it's tool-less design, and in some places it works great, but there are a couple problems.

First off I put in all my drives and sorted out the cabling a bit as preperation for the motherboard assembly. There are plenty of well-placed holes for you to tuck wires into to keep them out of site which is great! Putting in the ODDs literally took less than 2 minutes and didn't require a screwdriver - good stuff!

The case stripped down and ready for the ODDs

ODDs in and front-panel cables out of the way

The OCUK Blu-Ray drive looks fantastic with this case.. shame about the LG drive - I might ditch it later, I practically never burn DVDs!

Next up was the HDD. I'm using a 1TB HDD and a 30GB SSD for the Operating System and key applications. All that's going in just now as is the HDD. This was quick and easy and again I didn't need to use any tools - the HDD cage looks awesome!!

So next up was the power supply - I went with the corsair 650W because it's perfect for my requirements and the modular cabling means I will be able to get it all very tidy with ease. No screws this time either, just a lever mechanism in the case that keeps it very tight and the included cable management clip is cool too

Motherboard time now and first up was the Geil Memory. These are pretty speedy for a good price and they are also black with red LEDs on them... perfect!

Now for the Megahalems. I told a bit of a lie when I said that this was my first build - I slapped together a mATX machine in a couple hours before Christmas but I don't think that really counts... anyway, I had SO much trouble with the intel stock cooler that I really wasn't looking forward to this.

I had some trouble getting the spring loaded screws on because of the guides not being very obvious on the upper part of the mounting in regards what way around they should be for my socket size... got there in the end though!!

So next it was time to put the motherboard in. It was a bit of a tight squeeze but it went in nicely with the Lian Li thumbscrews.

Here's the back of the case to show what I did with the cabling (no cable management yet really with clips and zips... will come later ;))

Now I came to the GFX and Sound Cards. This is where I got annoyed at the 'tool-less' design of the case. The upper clip for the 5850 went on fine but the lower clip (since it takes 2 PCI sockets) and the clip for the sound card wouldn't go on because of the shape of the cards. I put this totally on Lian-Li rather than ATI or ROG. I would do some serious damage to the cards if I tried to push the clip all the way.

Anyway, I managed to unscrew the parts of the clip so that they didn't obstruct the side of the case and put in screws for the dodgy ones so everything is fine and looks pretty good! The fans on the Megahalems are white right now because my black ones haven't been delivered yet.

Let me know what you think :D

Next Steps

As I mentioned, I haven't done any real cable management yet, and there is a good reason for that.

Here's a hint to why

DSC00718.JPG

..can't guess? This one kind of gives it away!!

This package of goodies should make everything look perfect!

You may notice there was some white sleeve in there too. Not sure what that was for but it works perfectly as it means I can try our some cable sleeving skills on the white fans that won't be going into the final build. I was very scared going into this because of all that I've heard about it being really tough but I think I did OK ;)

DSC00758.JPG

This looks AMAZING inside the case - makes me not want to take the white fans out :p They need to go though, they don't fit the black or red criteria :o

DSC00759.JPG

Stay tuned - I'm working all week so I'll start sleeving everything next weekend, until then I'm going to do some gaming :D Then after that I'll let you see some OC results - right now I'm running at stock :P

It is looking quite special.
I have the less flashy version of that case lol, love it - amazing quality.

How do you find braiding? How time consuming is it?

Braiding isn't so bad, first fan took me maybe 10 minutes and then just a couple minutes for the next one. It's really easy to pop out the connectors with that molex tool - had no trouble at all. It will probably take some patience to get all the lengths perfect and the heatshrink lengths looking the same but now that I've done a couple I'm happy that the rest should be easy!! Just a bit time consuming :p

superb - very nice looking stuff - going to be getting my re-build up and running soon and plan on doing some braiding as well once i get the chance.

Yeah the braiding was a bit steep but I got plenty of it plus a really good guide from the guy on how to make the most of it (better than any guide I've seen anywhere else). I don't think I'd go back on the decision though as I've seen a lot of good builds done with this braid and not a lot of info about alternatives.

Doesn't help that the pound/euro exchange has been mince for the last couple years!

Another thing that I'm goint to look at is creating a controller for all of the LEDs in the fans, allowing me to switch them on or off. It's a quiet build but all those bright lights don't make it ideal for running during the night. If I get that working then I can look at a more complex LED controller, I'm fairly handy with a circuit board after doing some electronics in Uni!

I've found quite a cool guide here: http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=154804&page=2

The thread is quite good as it goes through the motions of starting from nowhere, messing it up, and then getting it working... it's always best to learn from somebody elses mistakes! :D

This is something else that I can test out on the white pearl fans I won't be using, they must feel like right guinea pigs :p

Case and components look stunning and top job on the braiding dude but that side window looks like something out of Max Power...

It simply is awful and brings a whole tackiness flavour into a build that really is superb.

Just my 2p anyway..!! :D

The Window really is marmite, I went through a few phases of loving and hating it before I finally decided that I was happy with it :D

It looks really good in the flesh actually, the quality and details take away from the gimmick somewhat - hopefully once it's all done and I get some better quality pictures of the side of the case it might do it some justice

Man I want this case so much now!
D:
No fair - I hate being a student with no imcome xD

haha I know what you mean man - I go back to being a student next year, making the most of the sweet sweet internship money just now while I can, it will most likely dry up by the time I get back to the student union :D

Thanks for all the nice comments folks :)

I feel this case will be eclipsed somewhat by the Lancool Dragon-Lord PC-K62 Mid Tower - Red Dragon Windowed Edition, which for me is easier on the eye especially with the subtler window design.

Sorry didnt mean to steal your thunder its still a gorgeous case, and as theres always something better on the horizon you can never win.

Quick question. Why buy a triple channel memory kit for a dual channel motherboard? Won't it run at single channel with three sticks fitted?

First time i have seen DDR3 without heatsinks. Look's quite nice.
