Lian-Li PC-7 - Rattling, whining, echoing...

Just bought this case along with a new c2d system, anyone want a opty165? :)

Given the price and recommendations I thought it would be a quality piece of kit. But... The Aluminium is so thin that the side panels vibrate heavily when the dvdrw spins up. I had to turn the HD acoustic management settings to the lowest otherwise HD seeking sounded like I was being shot at.

It also seems to whine and hum when idling (bit like a ferry), unless I hold the sides and the removable cd/fdd inserts. The front case fan is pretty loud considering its 12cm, so its unplugged.

Has anyone got any proven tips to dampen the case/hd/dvdrw? Don't want to spend much more cash. Kinda going against having bought a corsair psu for silence.

I'm guessing Overclockers wont accept a return on this shoddy thing due to it being used? Temped to put everything into my old steel & plastic case, warm but quiet.

Thats where ive put it on my side panels, around the edges on both panels. Works a treat and ive also put a little bit of Bog roll folded over a few times under the feet to stop the vibrations on my desk.

Cheers crossy for taking the time to post the pic... Gonna give it a go with some white tack as a short term solution. Mite leave the loo paper out of it for the mo tho...

messiah khan - Neoprene? Isn't that wetsuit material? Would I be using that in place of bluetack, or to cover the whole insides of the sidepanels?

Thanks again.

Not a problem mate, glad i could help :D

yea i too made the poor decision of buying this case and have the same problem. Usually i spend much less on a case and get better results. E.g the last case i bought was £30 and came with a window without added charge, doesnt rattle and looks good. Ok its not got a nice metal finish and its mostly plastic and steel but i look at my old computer these days almost missing it

i have exactly the same problem.. i find 2 heavyish bowls do the trick of stoping the rattleing.. bloody anoying isnt it.. perticuly when the case isnt exatly cheap plastic either..

So far, I've blue tacked up one side of the case and used strips of cut rubber bands for the other. Gonna see which is best.. Still infuriating tho.

The stock front fan on the case is really noisy, is there anything cheaper/better than a Zalman Fan Mate 2 switch to lower the voltage & rpms? My last abit an8 motherboard could do this in the bios. The Gigabyte DS3P doesnt seem to be able to...

Are the bowls just plonked on the case? Thought about putting something between the psu and the roof, but the psu is so quiet, i'm not sure it's a cause.

It might be. Its basicalyl a closed cell foam. I use it for insulation on my phase unit. You probably could cover the whole sidepanel with it, although it probably wouldn't do much good for temps.

i dont know about anyone else but my noise seems to eminate from the top of the casing, around where the cd drive is. If i press in the side i can make the sound worse though. I dunno why it comes from there but i only really noticed it when adding a 4th HDD. I was thinking of using some HDD silencing screws or something but ofcourse i know we cant recommend other places, does OC do them?

After refitting both sides my PC-7++ has no rattle at all, next is to replace those loud fans with something better....

I've pretty much sorted it now. I got some rubber frames to go around the fans, a fan controller to lower their speed and some rubber washers for the hd/dvd screws. I've also bluetacked the side panel as shown above and between the fdd and cd removable panels. So far so good.

Take out the stock Fans, replace with Yateloons @ 7volts.Instead of blu Tac,go to the nearest B and queue, get some insulation strip/Draught excluder(the foam strip stuff),put that inside the panels, and to stop the HD Rack vibrating,Drill out the Rivets(4mm Drill Bit) on the bracket that holds the HD Rack at the rear and replace with a nut and bolt.Replace the 2 Screws at the front (that hold down the HD Rack at the front) with Thumbscrews,(if you don`t have the standard Lian Li ones, use Thumbscrews for a Steel Case, they cut their own thread).I`ve done it on the last 7 builds in a PC7,it solves all the minor rattles ect, can post pics to make it clearer if needed ;)

It is actually a good point that you can fix these things in the PC7+.

I must say though, the parts you fit into the computer should not cause vibration that bad in the first place.

The PC7+ should not vibrate if all the components are installed correctly without fault; although it can resonate.

Tackle the source of the problem not the end result. :)
