hello all

i have the wanderful pci 7 plus case, and i can hear a slight humming so the fans will be replaced but i think is coming from the hhds cage.

is there anyway i can quietn this humming down.

there are 2 screws that screw the cage to the case is there anything i can do there to quieten it.

any pics or suggestions would be great.

many thanks

I have similar resonance problems, but I have removed the hard drive rack. Most of the buzzing or humming in the pc-7 comes from the front panel and blanking covers, use blutack in the joins to reduce this.

Side panels too, I've used Asaka Paxmate to stop the panels from vibrating, but putty will work too.

Unplug the fans and see how mucg noise they actually make first.

Or maybe just the hard drive? with the side off the case hold the hard drive cage and see if that makes a difference, should stop any resonation.

You really need to see for definate where the noise is coming from first, but blue tack it a sugestion, place it anywhere that you have gaps.

Please PLEASE don't use pax mate on your case!

The drive blanks - the bits to fill the whole where your optical drives would go, if not fitted securely can cause noise, the suggestion is to put a bit of blue tack between the drive blanks

will do that as well, i think the noise is mainly from the fans and the cage tbh

hi Harib0

i have stopped all the fans in the case and that made a difference but the hummig was still there.

i couldnt take out the cage yet as it ws screwed in and the hdds are covering em vut i will soon, what i found that when i did hold the cage i felt a lot of resognation .

i think the humming is mostly emiiting from there, so any idea how to solve this, anything i can buy or do my self please let me know.

other suggestions from everyone else are welcome :)

thanks

Okay, you have a few options here:

1) Buy a hard-drive enclosure. I recommend the Silentmaxx Aluminium Hard Drive Enclosure (HS-000-OK)

2) Try using gel-pads or blu-tac and sit the hard-drive on top of it. These will absorb any resonating.

3) Remove the hard-drive cage and implement the hard-drive bungee mod :)

hi

thanks for the suggestions, anyway i can mod the actual cage something to do with rubber bands?

thanks

Not really. To decouple the drives using a bungee mod or rubber pads etc, you need space around the drives. Therefore you will need to move the harddrives into 5 1/4" bays. If you can afford them, I highly reccomend the Smart Drive 2002c enclosures.

This is how I've modded the HDD cage in my Lian Li V1000. I took of the plastic railes which were holding the drives, then I bolted on these aluminium wings and stuck some gel pads on them. I have 3 HDDs and there is no vibration of the cage.

You could not do that to a PC7+ though, the cage does not have enough room on the sides to fit it in.

You can put tiny elastic bands and wedge them under the holder, what I did once and it works brilliantly. (Bit of a tricky time fitting it back, but worth it.)

A vertical bungee mod should be acheivable with the PC-7 drive-bay, though it would need some form of additional support to keep the drives vertical.

I've got a drive-bay here, I'll dig out a spare HDD and have a go later.

Another option, though not as effective as the bungee mod, is to remove the thumbscrews and pop-riveted bracket fixings and use pump decoupling mounts to attach the drive-bay to the case.
Need to use thumbscrews to attach the HDDs to avoid unbolting the drive-bay to replace a drive.
