So my dad who lives in Portugal & the UK fell victim to the Portuguese crack downs.

last year he was driving in Portugal and apparently did not dip his headlights in time, on the spot 60Euro fine. Harsh but he paid it. 4 months later he had a letter which said he had to go to the local police office, they for no good reason took his licence away for 30 days as the first crime of not dipping the headlights warranted that under new laws.... So they basically bad dated his punishment.... yeah sounds legal right!

anyway my question is, does that ban carry over to the UK? his licence is now with the Portugal version of the DVLA

thats good to know, what about if he is stopped over here and has no licence to show for 30 days plus postage?

sooooo corrupt over there

As long as he's applied for a replacement licence over here I don't see it being a problem as long as he tells the officer the truth. They can check whether the driver has a licence via their systems, which is what they tend to do if they stop someone who isn't carrying it with them at the time.

1 month ban for not dipping your headlights? Seems a bit harsh!

he was fined 60Euro on the spot, then a letter was sent asking him to come to a station,

there is a massive crack down out there, mainly on ex pats.

the worse thing was he did dip his headlights and paid the fine to save aggro as a few brits have been banged up over night for disputing stupid on the spot fines...

How do they know they are ex pats before they pull them over?

Or are they the only ones driving with full beams on...

Or he can just say he lost it and is in the process of applying for a new one. The police can check if he has a licence using other means.

IMO, producers will probably become a lot less common (if at all) given that everything is going "online" in some form or another - MOT, Insurance, V5, Licence etc. The police will be able to check them easily, people's time will be wasted less visiting a police station and fraudulent docs will be harder to be used.

All that should be needed is your photocard to verify ID. If you have this in your wallet/purse at the time then it should be enough.

Its a xpat area... Driving seat on other side, imported car.

Anyway regardless. 60euro fine then a 30 day ban handed out some 4 months later is harsh.

How exactly do they measure what is the appropriate "time" to dip headlights anyway? Surely that's completely subjective and dependent on the geography of the road?

That's Portugal knocked off my list of places to go on Holiday :p

My parents have been living there for 10 years. It has really changed and although very safe there is a lot of courption and unfair behaviour. My dad is 67 and never had any trouble in his life. They will be lost without a car so will come back to the UK for a bit.

can we do this to the people who drive on the motorway/anyroad behind me with their full beams on please :p

but damn! that's pretty damn harsh for what could be considered fine timing by others but not by some.
