System in sig was getting on a bit (still is ):
The platform upgrade itch was so strong, but I held firm and instead:
Why didn't I do this sooner? £80 and an hour later:
I think having the 2500k with such a stable overclock for about 7-8 years just made me lazy TBH
Merry Christmas overclockers!!
- The 250GB SSD which contained the OS was nearly full, deleting the hibernation file freed up a couple of GB but I'd already moved my steam games and documents to a mechanical drive to make room.
- After running stable for years I was getting the odd crash, about twice per month on average, which I just lived with rather than doing something about it.
- Temps were creeping up, about 3 - 4c higher than they would normal be above ambient temp.
The platform upgrade itch was so strong, but I held firm and instead:
- Bought a 500GB Evo 860 SSD and cloned the OS onto it.
- Formatted the 250GB Evo 850 and put Steam games on it.
- Increased Vcore from 1.312v to 1.32v.
- Removed CPU fan, hoovered heatsink, CPU fan, case fans and reassembled.
Why didn't I do this sooner? £80 and an hour later:
- System rock solid (stress-tested)
- Games launch quickly again. The Hunter Call of the Wild now goes from desktop to in-game in about 15-20 secs.
- 250GB free space on OS drive
- Temps back down to normal.
