Life without lots of stuff

Mostly what Im hearing here is a bigger van is required :p This would do and a long driveway to keep it on

I've started to restrict myself i.e. 1x 35 litre "really useful" box for cables (can get one with compartments and a tray inside) - and discard, give away or sell the least likely to be needed ones if it is getting full.
I agree with that part, give away more stuff. Anyone big into tech should be giving away quite a lot of spares/building rigs for relatives

I'm starting to go more and more this way, and hear stories like this all the time.

For the past 10 years or so I've been on a fairly constant path of working hard with long hours, climbing the career ladder, more money etc. In that time I've bought nice clothes, a sports car, a rolex, handmade shoes, well specced PC etc. When I look back I only really remember the experiences, holidays in other continents, climbing Kilimanjaro. None of the material stuff sticks out. I think a lot of luxuries are only worthwhile when you're chasing them, once you've got them the buzz wears off.

Pretty sure I'm going to sell the car soon, and the watch might follow...

Funny this popped up. Tomorrow I will be going through my house to declutter All those old DVD's which I already have on Blu Ray or will not watch anymore. All taking up space for no reason.

I don't have a woman to take my stuff so still have all the stuff I have accumulated over the years…I could give it all away or I could just have it but just not use it.

I have however become said person that tend to get the best of something and don't really upgrade.

However, I do keep looking at crap, junk and just utter tosh. Only yesterday I was looking at some random Rambo looking knife to use to open Amazon Parcels, I actually spent about 10nmins looking at it online before I slap myself silly for doing so.

That's more junk that one don't need.

I have some possessions but only what I want. Nothing extra or anything that don't serve me any purpose.

We have nothing left to throw out or sell.

Moving from UAE to UK gave me a choice. A shipping container or a suitcase. I went with suitcase.

I've accumulated stuff since. Actually having a purge now but not as drastic sadly.

I've been spending way too long checking my tongue in the mirror
And bending over backwards just to try to see it clearer
But my breath fogged up the glass
And so I drew a new face and I laughed
I guess what I been saying is there ain't no better reason
To rid yourself of vanity and just go with the seasons
It's what we aim to do
Our name is our virtue

Don't understand why anyone gets married in the first place tbh. Just gives solicitors loads of money.

Would have thought people have learned by now that the whole 2gether 4ever doesn't really work. Just locks both parties down into a financial mess that requires money to get out of.

Well I've been with my mrs since 1988 and married since 1993 so I'm not sure that's entirely true.

Keep the watch, sell the car. A car will usually always lose value, a Rolex usually gains value.

Agree, the Rolex won't lose money and is highly portable. Sell it if you could use the money for something better. But until then keep it as a non-depreciating asset.

I now basically only have a MacBook, iPhone, Bluetooth speaker, one watch, one car, one nice pen and the clothes I actually need and a couple of pairs of decent shoes and nothing else.

I had spent my life chasing material assets and spending money on things I don't actually need.

Your lack of self awareness and perspective is amazing, love these threads.

I much prefer to hold back, decided what I really want and invest money into that. I'd be kidding myself if I thought I had 'Life without lots of stuff'. But when i first started working I was going pay day to pay day getting things that I 'wanted' but didn't need and ended up providing little value. Fortunately I woke up pretty quickly and set myself targets and stop myself making snap decisions.

Don't worry, there's still time!

I don't think I made the point very well. My grandma and grandad were married over 50 years so yes it does work in some cases, but the point I was trying to make is do people stay together because they are married or because they actually enjoy being with each other.

If you enjoy being with each other then why would you need to be married to continue this? It's just a kind of pointless exercise

It's funny how as someone who has never had much in the way of material things I struggle to imagine why anyone would want to give nice things up.

I'd kill for some actual affluence.

I've never been much of a materialist. Never wanted to keep up with the Jones's. They're Welsh anyway. Obviously you need essential like a comfy bed, a good sized telly and an ample supply of booze when required (I've practically cut that out for one thing or another).

All you need after that is a contented, cheerful outlook on life.
