hi guys,

i have a spotlight in my room, it has 4 bulbs, now the original bulbs are 20W but i only have 50W bulbs spare, will anything bad happen if i put 2 50W bulbs in for a few days until i can get some 20W ones?

thanks

well it takes a little longer for the lights to come on, but apart from that it seems to be running fine.

if something were to go wrong - for example the fitting can't take the extra power - what would happen, and how would i know it is happening?

thanks

They would overheat, melting the fitting if there is plastic inside it. If it got hot enough with flammable things round it, it could produce a fire.

oh that is gay, oh well i hope i can smell the fire first if one is to come!!!

i shall try to keep them on for as little time as possible then!

thanks

I'm guessing you've got 4 x 12v 20w lamps running from a transformer?

Putting the 50w lamps in will fubar the transformer pretty quickly as it will have too much demand on it, you'll soon be able to smell the varnish (or plastic on a newer type) as it overheats.

Done it before, after a while you smell melting plastic. Then it's time to turn it off for a while to cool down. ;)

This sounds like a disaster and/or tragedy in the making. Is it really worth the risk?

Just buy replacement 20W bulbs. Most big supermarkets sell them if you cba going to a DIY shop...

shouldn't lights be made so that if they get so hot that they will cause a fire that the brake something and stop working? saving the whole place from burning down. surely something like this is required to be in place?

Depends if the consumer wants to pay 10 times the price of a fitting for this feature. I'd imagine, no.
