I dont know where else to ask, but do lighters exist that when you flick the lid, the flame automatically come on? style a bit like a zippo but the flame starts when you open the lid?

Hey Sukh. Unless I miss my mark I'd say you're foraging for new money making gadgets. True entreprenurial spirit if that's the case, matey...

Don't waste your time on that one though. Devising a catch, link or whatever would be pretty simple. If there were a market someone would have done that one by now. Move on and figure out something more commercial. Unless, of course, you've spotted something and have come up with lighter-of-all-lighters.

Here are a couple of tips though if innovation's your bag:

Check out the Patents Office based at Newport, Gwent. They do a freebie info pack explaining patenting, copyright, trademarking and design registration.

If you think you've spotted a winning new gadget that it appears no-one else has here are some patent basics...

For anything to be patentable it must be deemed original, capable of being reproduced and have industrial application. Certain things are excluded - items deemed to effect national security, scientific discoveries (as far as I recall) etc..

A UK patent used to cost £25 to file. Now it's free.

Rule 1. Tell no-one. Work in secret either as an individual or cooperative. The advantage of a cooperative is greater thinking power/resources. The weakness is one of the group could blab. If the idea's blabbed before the patent office give you a receipt (effectively your Filing Date) it constitutes disclosure and in law that invalidates patentability.

Rule 2. Never file prematurely. If you do then any subsequent mod cannot be added retrospectively to your original filed application. You'd have to file an additional application claiming priority (right to previously disclosed materials) related to original patent.

All sounds complicated but it's got to be studied if you're gadgety and fancy a shot at big money. Patent agents are the people who do this work for you for a fee... Dragon's Den is the sort of place to pitch for venture capital but only if you've filed a patent app if it's a new gadget.

I'd suggest you search out individuals/organisations that actively support innovation. There may be grants to be had and access to useful stuff. Some patent agents offer a free first counselling. Don't disclose to them though unless you already filed. They're bound by law not to disclose what you tell them but be wary. Don't bother with that route though until you got a freebie patent office info pack.

Finally, innovation can to some extent be developed/learned. Observation and knowledge are the key.

If all this stuff is irrelevant because all you wanted was a popup lighter sorry about that mate! Useful info for others though hopefully....

Thanks for the reply, but i really am just looking for one. Im sure I have seen one in a movie, but as we know, not everything in movies are real. Just thought it would be a bit of a time saver just flicking the lid on a zippo like lighter and the flame coming on. :)

Yes they do, I had one for donkey's years until it got left in a pub :(

They are nowhere near as sturdy as Zippo's though.
Yep, I've owned both one of the silver ones in doofer's link and also a Zippo. The Zippo was built to withstand absolutely anything, whereas the silver auto-lighting one was fairly flimsy in comparison (in particular the circular tube where the cotton wool stuff is stored wasn't built to last) but it was very stylish.

Mine was a xmas present in '96 from a German guy I worked with during my placement year... no idea what I did with it. In fact I'd completely forgotten about it until I read this thread and saw doofer's link.

The stupid part is i don't smoke. Im in the "non-smokers but think lighters are useful somehow" group and I also have a smaller pocket above the normal pocket on my overcoat which is perfect for a lighter.

are zippos worth investing in? i do get through a fair few lighters myself.
flint has just gone in a clipper i have, have an electric spark thing on from a pub back home and a swan one i got bought cus i lost another one i had.
As it stands i just by cheap gas from the market and refill the electric spark one but zippos are kinda swish..

 the mother of all lighters!? http://www.zippo-windproof.co.uk/18-carat-solid-gold-357-p.asp

Zippos aren't really practical as cigarette lighters, they need refilling too frequently (every 2 or 3 days, depending on temperature!) and you need to keep buying flints, which is a pain.

they're really only good for burning things dramatically (like evidence, or Austrian Castles, or Vietnamese villages!) and looking "well swish".
i love my imperial Filligree:

Has anyone seen the book Vietnam Zippos?

Synopsis

This book showcases for the first time the personalized Zippo engravings by American soldiers made during the Vietnam War (1964-1973). Drawn from the collection of American artist Bradford Edwards and other private collections, the chrome-plated brass bears witness to the uncensored feelings of young men at war; their testimony is shocking, hilarious in its bitter satire and poignant. Soldiers engraved love, death, sex, drugs and rock'n'roll onto the canvases of their Zippo lighters, in a real-life version of the war portrayed in Francis Ford Coppola's epic film "Apocalypse Now". Of the thousands of documents on the Vietnam War, none is so raw, so immediate and so resonant today.

Really interesting book.
