Winter is fast approaching, getting darker earlier and staying dark later in the morning, as such I'm looking at improving the lighting on my YZF-R125 I want to know wether on not these HID kits I see on eBay and such are a) any good, and b) legal. I know there's been a big hoohar about retrofitting chavtastic HID kits to cars when they're not suited but I'm wondering are bikes covered by this as well? If it's illegal, does anyone know of some better quality brighter lamps I could get instead of an HID kit, I don't know what lamps are currently in specifically, only that they're 12V 55W Halogens (preferebly ones that give off a white lighter to match my white LED sidelights).

Also, currently it has a dipped beam and main beam (which I never use) I'm wondering if by law you need to have a main beam? If not I'm thinking about doing a dual light conversion and adjusting the main beam down to dipped beam, to improve visibility to and from the bike.

Cheers.

HID will be the best but technically illegal and more hassle to fit. Depends if you can be bothered with changing them back at MOT time and potentially blinding other drivers.

I personally couldn't so I bought these which work really well, a definite improvement.

i think you have to have a main beam by law,you can wire the other headlight to work/come on with the ordinary headlight though

so that two lights stay lit and still have the main beam work if needed

One way to make a big improvement is fitting an uprated lamp (like the one in eidolons link) in conjunction with a relay kit. This eliminate the significant voltage drop you get from the undersized cable in the original wiring loom.

A chap at work with an SV650 fitted one and the difference was quite impressive.
