I was woken this morning by what can only be described as a bomb going off! My room shook and fences had been ripped off and bins been thrown into the road, a school and a hotel had been hit by a lightning strike :eek:

Mental. Will never forget how loud that 'thunder' was, it is very hard to describe noise, but omg I pooed myself :eek:
 
I had something like that last year in South America. You know when a strike is close when it just explodes and everyone ***** themselves. Even the locals screamed and car alarms were going off! No long grumble either, just a *BANG*!
 
Had similar near me back in 2001. It had been thundering through the night for about 2 hours. Finally it seemed to be fading away when there was suddenly a massive similtaneous flash and bang. A house just round the corner had taken a direct strike. It was so badly damaged it had to be completely demolished and rebuilt from scratch.
 
Be afraid, because if one strikes close enough to you, you will be.

I recall one striking a building no more the 150 yards away, I never want to hear another bang that loud & I rarely worry about thunder storms.

The one in the hotel is well suspect, sounds like an insurance job to me.
 
Was in a tower in Austria years ago when it was struck by lightening and I thought it was a bomb going off as well.

I had lightning strike a telegraph pole outside my flat many years ago, fried my phones, TV, Surround sound setup but only took out my modem in my PC. I know what you mean about it sounding like a bomb going off!
 
I once woke up with sparks flying out from the wall where all my plug sockets were. I was heavily intoxicated at the time, so went back to sleep thinking I was still drunk. Anyway, the next day half the of the electrics in the house were fried. TV, sound system etc. I was told lightning probably hit the the earth and travelled up.

Anyway fast forward 5 years, I hear a huge bang and wet myself. I look out the window and there's a tree in my garden, a huge branch fell to the ground, black and smoking. Definitely lightning that time, and only a few metres away from where it hit last time.
 
I remember at football training years ago when we saw a storm heading our way. We could see the lightning getting closer and closer and I remember the hair standing up on my head just before an almighty bang as the lightning struck very close by. Needless to say we all ran like hell for the safety of our cars. :eek:
