I don't think I am surge protected at all and thunderstorms made power flick on and off and my PC is still here to tell the tale!

Eventually it'll happen. It's just a matter of time. And when it does happen it'll take everything out.

I think people exaggerate a tad. My old pc had no surge protection at all, just straight in the wall socket for about 3-4 years. In that time I had a couple of surges and at least 3 powercuts. The pc was turned on most of the time and everything is still working fine to this day.

I am buying a surge protector now though because my new pc is expensive-ish, but a £100+ UPS? i don't really see the point, i can understand big surges causing damage but i doubt your pc would break just from a powercut. maybe lose some data.
