Morning all,

I need some help here, and I think GD is probably the best place for my question.

These lightning USB cables for iPhones, I use one to plug my phone into my car stereo to play music through it. This is fine with the original lead that I received with my phone, but the others that I have don't play music, they just charge the phone.

I've noticed that on eBay and Amazon they quite often have a bit that says data sync cable, from which the iPhone car charge and data will sync, or something along those lines. None of them actually say that their cables do everything, so how the hell are you supposed to know what to buy???

If someone could tell me I'd really appreciate it!

The cheap ones will only charge.

You need to buy an expensive one or a real apple one to be sure it will charge and allow data transfer

Classic Apple though. Invent a proprietary cable and charge a fortune for it.

That's not really fair, the last 30pin connection apple used on iphones/ipads/ipods was around for 10 years, name me one other company that used the same connector for that long?

I bought a short lightning cable for the car (circa £5) and it works fine.

Charges and allows data transfer

The connector's not the issue, it is the fact it's proprietary.

Same carp with iPad one, it detects copy cables and pops up a message, halting the app. I still haven't found a cheap cable that works properly.

Cables don't last forever, particulary when they are as weakly made as Apple's, coughing up £20-30 each time is a rip

This.

OP, when buying cables like this it's usually worth looking on the seller's feedback page for someone who bought the exact item and see what they say, can be very useful.
