Did anyone have any breakthroughs in getting LR running better? The slow performance is driving me to do a full PC upgrade, albeit from a 2014 build
I upgraded mine from a 2014 build earlier this year, though it was mostly for the improved transfer speeds via USB4 and failing USB3 ports that finally forced me to upgrade.
Key performance improvements were:
1) Install the software on a fast SSD, and edit your photos on the same drive (or one with similar fast speeds). I edit all new photos on the fastest drive in their own separate catalogue, then copy the whole directory to slower/archive drives at a later date.
2) Edit/Preferences and change the amount of cache to at least 20Gb
3) At least 32Gb of RAM
4) Avoid use of AI denoise on all photos, and also AI masks unless you have a fast GPU. I used to rock a 1070Ti which took about 30 seconds per de-noise, and AI subject/background select took at least 10-15 seconds. On the new build with a 4070Ti (16Gb version), the AI masking takes seconds and de-noise less than 10, though I very rarely use this unless ISO is above 6400. If I do need de-noise, than use the older version instead of AI which is more or less instant.
5) If you notice LR getting slow, particularly when moving from image to image then it's quicker to quit the application and restart it. I'm assuming it's some sort of memory leak. If restarting doesn't help much, then sometimes a full reboot every few hours of editing helps, though I've only really needed this if there are video files as well as photos in the catalogue and I've clicked on them.
6) It's faster to go from image to image in the Library module, rather than develop. Even in Library module you can do a right click, and do a paste develop settings from previous image which is faster.
I also use a macbook pro for editing whilst away for a weekend, and the macbook doesn't seem to suffer the same slowing down over extended editing sessions, particularly when there are videos as well. This suggests that some of the issues may be windows related. I had the same slowing down issues on both my old machine (W10), and my new W11 build.
