Lightroom and Photoshop running like ****

I have a free month of LR and PS through an nVidia promotion. I've used LR CC for years and it's been a bit sluggish, never used PS.

After getting the cloud backed versions, LR runs like dog ****. Using the local tab instead of cloud seems to help a bit but as soon I start using masks, there's a ticking clock before it completely craps the bed; e.g. extremely slow switching tools or photos or a tool won't show the required icon on the photo - I have to switch to another tool, photo or restart the app to get it back.

Are these apps really that bad or am I missing something? My CPU (5800X3D) is getting on a bit but it's hardly ancient, I have plenty of RAM (64GB) though have noticed LR can gobble up 15Gb without much effort. Admittedly my RAWs are saved on a HDD but I moved a batch to edit to my NVMe and whilst initially a little better, it didn't take long for the slowness to return. I have my 3090 turned on for optimisation. Any tips or advice?

And don't even get me started on 'updating AI settings', if I use the AI tab instead of local - it looked like it was going to take more than 15 minutes to simply copy and paste some settings to another photo.

I'm not sure if a recent update has absolutely ruined Lightroom performance or something but even on a 9800X3D, 64GB RAM and a 5090 it grinds to a halt after editing just a couple of images. Using the GPU option in settings as well like you and it just uses all 32GB of VRAM available plus most of the normal RAM. Using Nvme M.2 for all my drives and increased the cache size but it still crawls and has even crashed a couple of times.

I never used to have performance issues like this and has only started happening in the past month or so which suggests maybe Adobe screwed something up?!

Perhaps though the internet seems littered with people having similar complaints across the year. Just seems odd for two pieces of flagship software.

When I started playing with these AI powered full fat versions, I was thinking to myself 'I'm all in' only to be greeted with annoyances (some probably just having to relearn a few things) and terrible performance. I might have to go back to CC at this rate. Definitely seeing the appeal in PS though, particularly after shooting my first set of headshot portraits.

People on the On1 forum complain about performance of PhotoRAW2025 although most seem to use old laptops and say "why should I have to buy a new computer to run $90 software". Good job they arent gamers.

It's laughable how slow this is. I still have to exit LR after a while as it just becomes unusable, even when running normally - there is noticeable lag in almost every click. Moving 5 photos from LR to PS in one go, not a chance, the progress bar looked like I could cycle to work in less time. Yet doing 5 individual photos one after the other isn't too bad. As I type this, the CC app is taking ages/bordering stalling to check for updates.

Thank you. I haven't tried a reset yet but it's a new install so guessing it wouldn't make a difference. I tried Capture One, looked great but I'm so used to LR, I found using other software tricky.

It's a shame, I absolutely love PS in these first few days. I want to hold out for a while longer in the hope there is a fix.

Weirdly - it seems to be the healing tool that makes LR **** the bed the most.

Edit - PS is using 25GB of RAM with no image open, just the recent tab. WTF!?

Capture 1 seems expensive. I have been using On1photoraw for 5 years now and it seems to do most if not all that Adobe can do. The AI masking and depth masks which can be tweaked is really impressive. Just a bit different workflow but you can import LR catalogues into On1 and no subscription unless you want it.

I think the healing/remove tool has an option to use generative fill, which may be using local GPU resources or going to the cloud. If you have applied a few of these and then copy the settings to another photo then it likely will struggle.

I’ve found that if I’ve imported some videos and have played them in LR a few times, then the program becomes progressively more laggy and even quitting and restarting doesn’t always work and a full reboot is needed.

Interestingly, I use a MacBook for editing whilst away from home and it doesn’t suffer with increasing slowness.
