I thought I'd start a thread about Lightspeed broadband as I am getting close to pulling the trigger and swtiching to them, but any discussion about them in particular quickly gets lost in the other general FTTP threads.

I'm currently with Aquiss on 900/100, while their service has been great, the temptation of a symmetrical gigabit conneciton for less money has me very tempted. One main thing that was holding me back before was their use of CGNAT, but they recently announced that they now offer a static IPv4 for a small fee.

My only last concern is the fact that they use their own ONT/Router combination, and I use OPNsense, so I'm not sure how well their hardware will play with me using my own. Does anyone have any feedback on this? I can find lots of great reviews on Lightpseed but little to no information on running your own hardware.

It seems that Lightspeed are coming to our area too and are digging up the main roads this week!

Would definitely be interested to know what their service is like as 1G up and down for £46 makes them quite a bit cheaper than Virgin standalone broadband although in my current bundle not so much.

I have noticed something about their Nokia hub - they're offering 2Gbps packages but it only has 1G LAN ports. It's screaming out for a 2.5G port at the very least and that's assuming it has some kind of modem mode so you can put it into your own router.

EDIT: Seems there is no option to use Bridge Mode at the moment unless you complain and even then it's ropey as currently only being trialled.....Damn!

Not sure if they're maybe offering a different hub for the 2Gig package, but they don't advertise that they do so I guess not.

Bridge mode is being trialled at the moment yes, I asked for it. I also asked about it and whether it may be revoked, the answer I got was "The bridge mode we are set to introduce in the near future but currently its only on a trial stage, it would not be revoked".

It should also be noted that if you join up with a referral code, both parties get two months free which is pretty good.

I’ve got lightspeed but I’m in a different area. The main thing that annoys me is not being able to use my own equipment but given what’s posted above, I may get in touch with them.

Edit: I would assume they give you a different hub for the 2gb service

Yeah, it's worth getting in touch with them for sure.

They came and pulled some fibre through to my front door yesterday, so hopefully Monday should be a fairly quick and easy process.

have you managed to get bridge mode working?

My Ubiquiti router is asking for a ipv6 prefix number but one wasn’t supplied. There are a couple of standard values I can try but I just wondered if you managed to get it working.

Yes it's all working nicely. On the IPv6 side of things, I just have a prefix delegation of 56 set, that's about it, it all works nicely. I've been meaning to make a post of how it's all been so far with Lightspeed, but overall so far I'm happy, been doing 2-3TB in total bandwidth daily and there's been zero issues :)

Thanks, I'll give that a go tomorrow. When I did it originally I stupidly didn't have IPv6 set on the LAN side so the USG had internet but nothing was being passed through to the LAN.

I had another go over the weekend and I couldn’t get it working and I’m not really sure where I’m going wrong.

Further investigation points to my router isn’t actually getting an IP from the Nokia router when I put port 4 into bridge mode.

What settings did you change on the Nokia router?

I don't think I changed anything on the Nokia unit other than turning off the wifi. Lightspeed remote accessed it and changed it to bridge mode one night, sent me a few instructions and it worked perfectly from there on.

WAN config is very simple. DCHP on v4 and v6. I asked them for the MTU setting which was 1500. Set IPv6 PD to 56.

LAN I set IPv6 to Track Interface and selected the WAN interface.

Was you able to configure bridge mode on the router yourself or did they have to
Enable it?

Did you purchase a static IP? There business page is bit confusing suggesting you need two static IPs for bridge mode which doesnt make sense.

Is the external IP being passed directly in to opnsense or are you having to NAT it?

Thanks!

No I had to wait for them to do it, the settings for such are locked out until they change it.

Yes I purchased a static IP, that doesn’t make sense at all, I just have the one.

It’s direct into OPNsense, works perfectly well, as does ipv6.

Thanka for replying! Im looking forward to getting it ordered in few months when BT contract is over. Hoping black friday they may have a good deal on like last year!

How have you found stability?

They often have some good deals on. Stability has been top notch so far. I think I had two outages when I first joined, both of which were planned and notified about, and were both less than an hour at around 1AM. I used it fairly hard over the past couple of months, doing in excess of 65TB in bandwidth a month and it has been great.
