I know 'spec me a' threads are poor form but I know knacker all about fashion, as would be painfully clear if you ever saw me irl. With the decidedly wet weather but it still being quite warm I'm after a lightweight jacket to keep the rain off. My regular jacket is too warm & lacks a hood and I'm not really an umbrella type of guy.

As I say, it needs to be lightweight & showerproof, preferably with a built in hood - as in one that doesn't detach, not one of those you roll into the collar as favoured by my dad. I'm not a great fan of the cagoule-type (Berghaus/North Face) style either.

Anyone bought one recently that they'd recommend.

Depends how much you wanna spend;

Arcteryx Alpha LT - £300-350 but super light, beautifully cut and waterproof

Marmot Minimalist - £120-150 light, waterproof, well designed

I would look at Marmot, Mountain Hardware, Mammut, Patagonia and Arcteryx. All relatively expensive when compared to Berghaus, North Face etc. but far better designed, much higher quality and much nicer to look at.

Burtons do them.

I got them in the sale as their old design was less "trendy" with no patterns all over it, so went for that, it was less than half the price of the current jacket despite it being the same, except for a more subtle pattern :)

They only have the new type:

Basically it's really thin, waterproof and has a cotton lining, with a built in hood. It's neither too cool, nor too hot. I've never been cold with it on.

Thanks xarr,

Having had a second company cancel my order for a Helly Hansen Packable I've got a Marmot Minimalist on the way.

Looks good and thanks for pointing them out.

No worries, Marmot beats the pants off Helly Hansen. Remember the cut will be closer than Helly and the hood may seem massive, but its designed to take a helmet. Only wash with Nikwax tech wash, the Grangers equivalent or pure soap flakes (cheap at Tesco) otherwise you will nix the breathability. Also if your using the reproofing stuff, use the spray on stuff. Its a bit more work but you can double the layers on the shoulders and back where it rubs off easier and it doesn't coat the inside like the wash in stuff.

I've got a Musto BR2 Inshore for when it gets really wet (and the few occasions when I go sailing) but I just wanted something lightweight to keep in my bag. I wasn't looking to spend as much as the marmot (the HH is half the price) but the extra durability should be useful.
