I have just inherited a Bissell Lightweight vac - showed it to wife and she tried it and was smitten.
What should I be looking at if I wanted to buy the same sort of thing but battery powered and just put it back into the charging stand.
It needs to be lightweight so possibly do so much then put it on charge then carry on vaccuming -also quiet.
Wife is fed up of carting a normal vac around the house.

Youi're basically going to get a long list of people who reckon the one they've got is the best thing that's ever existed.

But, for what it's worth - I'm very pleased with our Shark Stratos. Two batteries, and a charging caddy which is separate to the vac, so you can keep one on charge all the time and switch them when the one on the vac runs out. Each battery lasts me a few rounds of hoovering though.

If you wait for Black Friday, they always have a very significant discount too.

We've got a Dyson V8 and it's pretty crap. Previously had a Vax Blade Ultra and that was crap too.

They start off ok,but quickly lose effectiveness, and cleaning out the filters, which seems to be required constantly, never really gets it back to it's original performance.

Currently, and for some time, the Dyson won't work on high power mode. Internet searches suggest the battery needs replacing, which is quite expensive.

I kind of think this sort of vacuum is just inherently flawed. Maybe we've just bought badly though.

Blooming heck - at those sort of prices you need to be certain it is the one you want.
Yeah they went nuts. Originally the stick was a supplementary vacuum to a main vacuum. Then with EU regs on vacuum power it made sense for them to shift totally to stick vacuums and the prices just went nuts.

I think the v8 is the cheapest now.

The Dyson battery ones are a good idea but in my expereince they aren't really fit for purpose if you have anything bigger than a bedsit. The batteries don't last long on high power. I have the V6 version and its ok for a quick tidy up in the kitchen or doing the car. I've just bought a replacement battery from eBay as it basically lasts about 20 secs now.
Main vacuum is a Shark. It's pretty good, easy to clean / service and powerful enough to remove all the hair from my b****** black german shepherd who appears to constantly shed.

This is the current version - Shark Vacuum

We bought a new vac just before the new regs came out -at the moment it's 2000w - We have just had a good talk on it and have decided we will put up £300 for the right one.
Going to sleep on it now and start looking in ernest tomorrow.

Keep the 2000w for a monthly overhaul but you should be pleased by the power of the modern stick vacuums. Be aware though, they can be tough on wrists, so it might be worth a visit to Currys to try one out.

You have timed it well though - the Dyson black friday sale seems decent:

Keep the 2000w for the car btw, I've never had much luck with these sticks things in cars.

I have a new Karcher vac for the car and garage. It would also be good in the house -it's light -compact and cleans well -Find I use it a lot more in the garage where the old one was a faff to just get it out of it's hole.

I have an old Dyson v6 and it pretty good. When the battery gave up I changed the adapter so it could take my power tool batteries been fine for 6 years. More of a supplementary vacuum for the areas with hard floors though so mostly for pick up dog hair and dust every few days. Give is a good clean out every 6 months or so.

I have a hoover h-500

It's fairly cheap for cordless and is one of the the lighter models on the market. Has smaller than average battery and cannister that's basically the trade off.

Yeah, we have this. The only thing that annoys me vs our Dyson V8 it replaced is the lack of wall mount.

Unsure of the newer Dysons, but the V8 had a trigger which required you to hold it for power. My wife struggled with that aspect due to illness/joint issues. The Shark has an On/Off button which is much easier to use. Something to consider.

Luckily it works great for us - there's nowhere in the house I could wall mount it conveniently and be by a plug. So the charging / storing approaches being separated works perfectly for us.

It's interesting reading people saying they have a full size cleaner too because the cordless doesn't do a good enough job. When we first bought a Shark, that was exactly my intention. The plan lasted for one hoovering session, when we realised the Shark was getting up stuff the corded Dyson we had at the time hadn't been. So we just sold the Dyson.
Oh, a tip - buy some replacement filters from Amazon. They cost very little, and they make it much easier to make sure you change the filters frequently - because you don't have to plan it around not being able to hoover for 2 days while they dry out.

We have a Shark and I hate it. The suction is weak and the runtime is pathetic. Their customer service is abysmal. My £59 Silverline from Lidl is much better for suction, battery life, warranty and it came with heads for carpets and hard flooring. It has a nice wall mount bracket which also holds all of the spare tools.

I have just spent an hour reading "The best cordless vac in 2024" I am more confused than ever - Good one about the trigger.

We have come to the conclusion we need a light weight one with a switch and it has to be easy to turn round a corner - also bagless -2 batteries and good suction.
I think if push came to shove the wife would go for a battery version of the Bissel we have.
I also have two Makita hand held vac's (both over 25yrs old) -one on 9v and other on 7.2v and they really do suck up the bits unlike the lidl one which is gutless.
This is the trouble when you can access online to read reviews you get confussed.

Hoover h-free 500 fits the bill.
Battery is lower capacity than average though...

Go into a Currys and try them out. Some are a real pig to turn around a corner.

Have a samsung bespoke jet I think its called, stupidly overpriced but was on retailer discount with some samsung cashback, it came with a stand that sucks the dirt out of the cordless and charges it which I quite like.

The battery life is awful imo, especially if you go above the default power, but it is quite powerful. I also like the fact i just press a button to start it, i hated holding the trigger down on my dyson. Oh i had a dyson v10, it broke.

We have to go to Much Wenlock next Thursday and there is a Curry's on the way so will call in on way back - They certainly have a long list of battery vac's.
Thanks for the info everyone.
